babysun
I have both OS, windows and linux too. The good part is it works on windows. :)The sad part is most of the add-on not available for linux. :(I hope in near future linux users will be able to enjoy them as well. :)
Mike567
I have to agree, a lot of the web development extensions for firefox don't work under linux so now I'm ending up using windows even more than linux :(.

It was Google transfering their accounts over to the new format and today a new version of Customize Google came out that fixed the problems ;)
Geek-Squad
You really don't need fasterfox. All you need to do is in firefox type in: about:config than search for IPV6..Than double click on it.
Jayno
I have downloaded/installed a couple of FF add-ons (english and french dictionaries) but for the life of me I can't figure out how to use them! They don't appear on any toolbar and I can't see how to add them. If I open Tools/Add-ons Manager, it gives me options to update, uninstall or disable. I want to facking enable and use them!I think I picked up somewhere that you use them through the spell-checker. Where dat?!Basically, all I want to do is have the ability to open a french website and when I want to understand a word, I'd like to select it and run the dictionary. Alternatively, I'd like to be able to open the dictionary directly and type in a french word, then click to get the meaning. I realise I must be missing something obvious. I need to be told what that is please ...

-pops-
I think "dictionary" is not quite the correct word in the context of these add-ons. Spell checker might be more appropriate. In Firefox there is a selection of specialist search engines to the right of the address bar, including The Free Dictionary - which is very good and is a real dictionary. There is the option of adding more and, although I've not searched it, there is possibly/probably a French one available.

Unfortunately, I don't have search engine selection you refer to, not next to the address bar anyway. I have found a drop down menu on a lower toolbar which includes a tab for "other search engines" but there's no "Free dictionary" in there, and no facility to add anything.I've done a search through Google and Mozilla and cannot find idiot guides to solve this one. I'm stumped. :( Andsome - you need a cold shower
-pops-
That's odd. In all my Firefox installs this box is there. I haven't consciously loaded it and I assumed it was an integral part of the browser. :(
rong
I don't have it either, and mine has just updated.
Scarthy © ® ™
@ Jayno - I think FF has a built in spell checker - mine does and my brothers doesn't? Although when I updated his the other day there was an option to enable it on the webpage it loaded after the restart (on the webpage it loads to say 'you have the latest version', at the bottom somewhere). :DOr in "Tools - Options - Advanced - General" there is an option to turn it on <check my spelling as I type it> :DAlso for translating I use Babel Fish. On here you can copy and paste the words into the top box, drop the 'translate from and to' box down and select the language to translate 'from and to'. Alternatively paste the link for the site, in the bottom box and again, select the 'from and to' from the list. This is a great site! ;)
Mike567
To enable spell checking right click in a text area and it should have something about spell checking their allowing you to select which dictionary you would like.
Jayno
Thanks ScarthyI have the auto-spellcheck activated and I know Babel too. My issue here is simply that I wanted to have a quick dictionary facility within FF and expected the add-ons to deliver this, when at the moment, they don't.Thanks Mike567I've read the same advice as you offer on the authorised Mozilla support board but when I right click in a text field I do not get a language or spell checking prompt. As I say above, my FF is already set to automatically spellcheck english, but I'm still stuck with the problem of not being able to access/use the french or english dictionary add-ons I've installed.I've read comments on support boards that show other users are having my problem, and no one seems to know the answer. It's hopeless trying to get a horse's mouth solution as Mozilla are virtually uncontactable except by snailmail and I don't have the motivation to try that hard! Mike567
You can select another language by right clicking hovering over languages and it will then list all the languages you have installed, which you can then select what one you would like to use.Open source software doesn't really have very good support except when the dedicated users help them out. Jayno
I still couldn't crack it Mike so I've done the easy thing: found a free online french-english dictionary and drag-dropped it onto my toolbar. So easy I should have done this ages ago.Chose this one ici

APK
GREAT ONLINE SECURITY ORIENTED .XPI ADDONS FOR FIREFOX (top most one is QUITE new & quite useful... please, read on):PERSPECTIVES (by Carnegia Mellon U):http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~perspectives/firefox.html* GOOD STUFF, by CMU, whom I respect as an educational institution by ALL means... for Firefox users, who are 'security-conscious' internet-surfers! Here is a write up on it, & WHY you may wish to look into it:http://www.ddj.com/security/210200457:)(To help prevent the "infamous MITM attack" (MITM = 'man-in-the-middle'), in which a hacker/cracker inserts themselves between YOUR system & the site you intend to go to, & they usually target online shopping/commerce + banking sites online for this specifically, since it's your ca$h you're laying down when heading into they typically)APKP.S.=> I also use these as well (because I am VERY into & conscious of a 'secure online experience', personally)... NOW, I am guessing that @ least 1 of you guys have PROBABLY mentioned these too already here, but, just in case you have not? Check them out also (they're really good stuff):NoScript (up to version 1.8 as of the date of this posting):http://noscript.net/getit&AdBlock Plus:http://adblockplus.org/Additionally, since my post is "Security-Oriented"?FireFox 3.01 is also NOW free (has been since version 3.01 in fact, per SECUNIA.COM ratings) of KNOWN security vulnerabilities, finally (it had a 'rough time' between versions 2.x & 3.x the past year now, but I have to hand it to the FF development teams now @ this point, they've done well, so I am back using it once more because of this effort by they)... anyhow, enjoy, as those are the 3 really nice .xpi addons for FF I have run into over time that prove reliable & work well enough, for the security-oriented websurfers amongst you here... apk
APK
Another GREAT "security-oriented" .xpi addon for FireFox users (&, IE users too)?"WOT" (Web-Of-Trust)http://www.mywot.com/:)* Just adding that in, in continuation to my previous post above... nowadays, every little bit, helps, for security online!APK
