Huge Windows Xp Problem, Please Help Me Out!

Recommended Posts

Well i left for a week for michigan, and i got a call from my mom saying when she started the computer and logged onto her name (on windows xp) all she got was the background. I told her i would work on it when i got home. I came home and saw what she was talking about, when you logged onto your name, all you would get was a blank background, no icons, no start menu nothing (you cant even right click). I was able to open my task manager (ctrl+alt+del) and kill the explorer.exe process and force it to run again by file>run new task>explorer.exe (all in task manager). And magically it worked. I had icons and a start menu. Then my virus software alerts me a possible virus has been detected. So i scan my computer and find an exploit and one virus. I delete both of them, and reboot my computer. Once again no icons, or a start menu. I end explorer, and force run it again (as i did before) and notice three programs are running smbp, nmp, and unwise.exe, which i kept getting errors for. (not exactly sure if thats the exact name for the second one) i find them and delete them, now on boot up everythings normal except i get a ton of errors: " Cannot find and execute C:\windows\unwise.exe"

"Cant Load unwise" "try removing from registry"...ect. Also no *.exe will execute. I cant start AIM, Kazaa, mIrc, Yahoo... im only allowed into excel, internet explorer, word, notepad... stuff like that... any ideas how to get my comptuer back to normal??????? Some one please help me i would be forever grateful!!!!! :( :( :( :(

Just in case this is a genuine enquiry, and for the benefit of anybody else who may have got themselves into the same bother, I have just checked the Norton website and have come up with the following Backdoor.NetTrojan

Considering the list of "programs" that the postee is unable to use, I am not surprised he has a problem. The above link contains detailed instructions for how to clean up the mess made in the registry by this trojan. But personally I think you should erase the hard disc and start again, this time leaving off your file sharing programs!!!

I also presume that you have a decent system restore point (likely  ), you could try using that. And in future, make sure your av and personal firewalls are up todate and running.

Mr. Mouse.

EXE File Association Fix for Windows XP

This download restores the default File Association for EXE files. Download the REG file and save it to your hard drive. Double click the file you just saved and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking the file and selecting Edit.
