andsome Posted September 16, 2007 Author Report Share Posted September 16, 2007 Thanks folks. We love the lakes, and usually stay in Bowness or Ambleside, we fancied a change. Obviously we would prefer nice weather for walks, but some of the best drives have been in very wet weather. Honister Pass is particularly spectacular and slightly menacing if the weather is really bad. We drove through there once in an awful thunder storm with very low cloud, and it was very eerie, we felt as though we were the only people left on earth. :D Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

The weather for the drive up was good and sunny, and the drive up Kirkstone pass toward Ulswater was gorgeous. Tuesday was great until about 4PM, but by then we had done all that we wanted to. We went to Aira force waterfall. A very tricky clamber up to the falls for 'Er indoors with her bad arthritis, but well worth the struggle. I will check my photos later. Her ankles troubled her a bit on Wednesday so we went a drive round, with a few short walks here and there between the showers. ON Thursday we drove down to Cockermouth, and visited William Wordsworth's town house, it was very interesting. The weather was fine but with a chilly wind. From there we drove back via Buttermere and Honister Pass, an absolutely incredible drive and well worth another visit from us. It was foggy on the high ground in the pass. The Honister slate mine has been reopened and we went to the visitors centre, very interesting. We could have gone on a tour of the mine, but were warned that there were several stretches that needed you to shuffle along in a crouching positions, so we reluctantly didn't bother. The drive home on Friday was horrendous on the M 6, with many slow stretches in awful traffic and torrential rain. The B and B that we stayed at was definitely the best ever, we prefer a B and B for this sort of holiday in preference to a hotel. We found a pub nearby with the best pub grub that we have ever had anywhere, for an evening meal, at very reasonable prices. we will definitely stay at the same place again.
