UK Broadband coverage

Broadband was available here very soon after its launch, even though I'm in the back of beyond.

Reason? The then chairman of BT lived just down the road. I was getting short bursts of 2Mb way, way before it was generally available. Don't think we will be so ahead now as there has been a change of BT captain, well, two since then, I think.

We are still on a cable that was laid, from the village three miles to the East, to the village two miles to the West, of us, in 1938.

Earlier this year BT contractors came and laid trunking between the two villages and put in a new cable. We rejoiced ( as you would) until about three weeks ago. At that point the 'phones went off. Some times we could use BB but never the phone. After about a fortnight we got the 'phones back. I saw a couple of Outreach chaps working at the roadside a few hours before we were reconnected and I asked them what was happening and how it was that a new cable could go down so soon. It turned out that there are about a dozen or more of us, between the the villages, who are still on the old '39 cable!! So it is not just laying the cable, it is making the horse drink.

Cable was laid a long time ago round here, even though we are no where near to a big city. We had it installed in our house within a few months of it being available, through NTL, now Virgin of course. We have alway been more than happy with it, except that in the early days the back up was lousy, and a 45 minute wait for telephone assistance was normal, and e mail assistance could take up to three months for a reply. Things are fine now. :D

Seems to answer some questions, will have to wait for them to get their act together and see what the speeds are in the evenings. Not very impressed with broadbandgenie, they put two fairly posative reviews on the first page when there seems to be teething problems from reading the latest reviews. With Pipex at the moment and they are really slow in the evenings, less than one meg when I'm on 8 meg, I get 4.5 at the best but would not expect much more. Last time I phoned them about it they didn't seem bothered so like all of them the bigger they get the less the customer counts, they used to be one of the best.
