andsome
We have very little freedom left already, this would be just another step down the rocky slope.
-pops-
I can understand why people don't want their medical records on a central computer - especially with the current government's record and reputation in handling computer data but, from my own point of view, I'm not much bothered. My current state of health means that if I am taken ill, I am likely to require very urgent treatment and if this is facilitated by a quick tap of a number into a computer, all to the good. Mike567
What is wrong with having our information centralized? My uncle has to go through so much trouble to get his infromation to another doctor when he moves, so would this not stop this happening? catgate
What is wrong with having our information centralized?Which information and who is going to have access to it. Further more who is going to ensure that only those people who are honest, upright pillars of the community will see this information? If you knew who has access to "your information" at present, and you could see the potential of what they could do with it, you would not ask. AlanHo
I must admit that I am totally relaxed about my medical details being on a central data base. I appreciate that it just might fall under inappropriate scrutiny but I feel that the risk is more than offset by the benefits. My medical condition requires regular hospital check-ups. My GP can access this information in practically real time. I needed an X-ray a few months ago - went to see my doctor later the same day on an unrelated matter - and he had the full results of the X-ray on his desktop screen. The government already have the power and means to poke deeply into your banking and other affairs - so why the paranoia about a computer data base that has the potential to save lives. Watchful
I have done nothing so, agreed in principle, to what is, initially, limited details.
Mike567
I'm not sure about all the information in one place, I believe this allows them to possibly loose disks. But in some ways I believe it can be more secure especially having everything on computer. CurlyWhirly
Personally with the incompetence where the Government managed to lose the details of over 25 million people, I would be against this NHS Central database.
CurlyWhirly
But in some ways I believe it can be more secure especially having everything on computer.More secure, are you joking? Unless the current practices are tightened up, none of our personal data is safe. andsome
A central data base is fine in theory, but not safe in the hands of this lot. How much has been lost to date? Who would be able to access the information? What uses may be made by obtaining it? Let's hear more about safeguards first.
artist
A few years ago I needed a print out of my medical records. When I checked through them there were some discrepancies. Nothing too major but it was obvious that someone else's info had been put on my records in mistake. Also With my current problem - new knee replacement needed - it took me three years to get my doctor to refer me - and I was aware that he thought I was playing on the pain. Another doctor told me he was 'surprised that I need a knee replacement'. This could be construed that I am a malingerer. What is on YOUR records?!Do you know that in a survey - yes, I realise these are not accurate - two thirds of the doctors asked said they would not allow their own records to go central....... catgate
Since the above was posted I have had a GPO delivery.Due to a lifelong circulatory problem I have had to wear elastic stockings for the last twenty five years to control varicose ankle ulcers. They are "industrial"strength and have to be obtained from the hospital. The process to obtain new ones, every few months, is simply to ring them up, identify my self and describe what it is that I require. I then get a card some days later saying "Come and get 'em".During the second week of December decided I I needed some new ones. If I ring In the morning all that happens is a recorded message says that 'we are busy and if you leave you number we will ring you back'. So I usually ring p.m.. When I rang (p.m.) a young lady answered. I identified myself and started to tell her what I wanted. She said, "Oh, don't bother with that we have it on your records." So I thanked her and hung up.On Monday of this week I realised that I had not received a card telling me to go and pick up my stockings....so I rang them..(.pm). Another helpful young lady answered, was most apologetic, and said they would post them to me.This morning I got a package from the hospital. The name and first line of the address was right, As also was the post code. But the rest was nonsense. It was a place near Hull. When I opened the package the stockings were wrong. They should have been below knee, open toe. What I got were full length, full stockings that would have fit one of Les Dawson's "Roly Polies".This just goes to prove the true value of secure "official records".I now have to correct the situation caused by their "having my records" and entrusting someone with them. But there will only be a disembodied voice running the place until p.m.

Management was, for a good number of years, a medical secretary for a couple of orthopaedic surgeons. Some of the happenings, even just "in house", do not engender too much confidence. Watchful
I, too, have experienced cock-ups at our doctor's surgery. (Metaphorically speaking of course )On paper or PC, they need to get their act together.
catgate
I had an interesting 'phone call from the hospital this afternoon. The were returning my call of earlier in the afternoon. When I told the young lady of the problem she looked up my record and confirmed my address correctly.....so a transcription error. She then said she would see if a/ my stockings were still there and b/ if there was anyone complaining of getting the wrong stockings. The answer turned out to be NO. So she then concluded that the manufacturer had made a mistake!! (The stockings are made to measure...they tell me.) She would ring the supplier/manufacturer and get back to me.When she came back about half an hour later she was able to tell me that the manufacturer had some in stock and would post them to me direct. I don't know what address they will go to.
