It's true!

Recommended Posts

Imagine you're the owner of a file cabinet, but you don't have time to take care of it, and you want to hire someone to take care of it for you. Two people come for the job, a woman and a man.

* The man has the following strategy : he just empties the drawers when a file is removed, splits up any new file into smaller pieces the size of a drawer, and randomly stuffs each piece into the first available empty drawer. When you mention that this makes it rather difficult to find all the pieces of a particular file, the response is that a dozen boys must be hired every weekend to put the chest back in order.

* The woman has a different technique : she keeps track, on a piece of paper, of contiguous empty drawers. When a new file arrives, she searches this list for a sufficiently long row of empty drawers, and this is where the file is placed. In this way, provided there is enough activity, the file cabinet is always tidy.

Without a doubt, you should hire the woman (you should have known it, women are much better organized ). Well, Windows uses the first method ; Linux uses the second one. The more you use Windows, the slower it is to access files ; the more you use Linux, the faster it is. The choice is up to you!

An excellent advert for MS Windows.

Who, in their right minds would want to be saddled with a temperamental, moody, vindictive, nagging, critical, obsessive, emotive, unforgiving operating system - such as you describe Linux.

You will no doubt gather that I have just become single again.

That, of course, is very clever - to hire a woman with precognitive abilities (a witch?). How can she possibly guess how large a file is going to be? You start an application; the application is reading and writing files on the disk, and the clever witch-system (Linux) already knows how large the output files are going to be!

The Windows file system knows exactly where free space areas are located; it knows exactly how large each of these are, but it has no way of foretelling how large a newly opened output file is going to be. Maybe Microsoft should build a software alethiometer into the next version of NTFS?

I keep my computer tidy and defrag regularly. I have just reinstalled Windows after a disk failure, and the new installation is no faster than the old one, this is a result of my tidiness. I see no point in bothering to learn a new operating system when I am perfectly satisfied with the current one. :D

You have obviously not heard about Linus Torvalds' crystal ball.

I'm told that he is now undergoing treatment for it. Some sort of ointment to rub on , I think.

Single - I wish I remembered those days. I seem to remember something about not wearing pants and drinking beer quite often... Most likely having spilled the beer on my pants, and I had gone to wash them promptly.

What a joy you were to have around..........

:D
