What are they all trying to achieve by going up there?

There seems to be very little gain for anyone, other than employment for boffins and astroturfs, and it mops up ginormous amounts of money and energy, which could be used for a thousand better purposes,

I liked the bit where the newsreader said that the crew would be spending the next two to three day's in debriefing.

I think this is the time it will take to get them out of their briefs. Underwear will become very sticky and messy after a landing such has they had.
