Recommended Posts

Yep with Firefox having add ons of IE tabs actually dont need IE at all. Still cant get rid of IE6 only IE7.

ansome have you actually tried Firefox?

it really is better. :D

pat I am running Dell Inspiron 530 with 1 GB RAM and 160GB HD. Tech down at the Dell shop here said that many of his people with Dell have same problem. Since he recommended this model maybe all use it eh?

who knows - could well be that is doesn't like my email program which is Incredimail. I do because I love those emotions it uses - fun for friends but use Thunderbird for business where I dont know the recipient well. :good:

Firefox' IE Tab add-on needs IE to function; if you'd manage to uninstall IE, IE Tab will no longer function.

I remember when Andsome tried Firefox; he had a problem with the spellchecker add-on (which is, like all add-ons, a 3rd-party product), so he dumped the whole thing instead of letting us help him

Anyway, we are veering awfully off-topic here... :0

If FF can't even simplify a thing like downloading a spell checker, I worry about the rest of the program. I am perfectly happy with IE7. Is it not possible that tinkering about with FF if you are as much a novice as you say, could possibly be the root of the problems? Merely a suggestion. Surely it may have been better with hindsight to get the new computer running efficiently before messing about with other browsers. :D

P.S. Just noticed your reference to Incredimail. This is another program that seems to have given users a lot of bother. If you like emoticans, you can download them from the internet and use them in Outlook Express.

I have downloaded and installed SP3 on my "media" machine.

Apart from it appearing to halt half way through and then start up again, it all went OK. I haven't noticed any difference anywhere but I've not given it a thorough test yet.

I'm still very apprehensive about installing on my main machine, though. Perhaps this afternoon when I done the weekly housekeeping (anti-malware scans, backups etc).

Interesting!!!

I did the chores on my main main machine, took a deep breath and clicked on Window Update in Help & Support. After much fannying about and installing a Genuine Advantage tool, it told me there were no updates for my machine.

OK, that may be because I installed the "delay" thing to prevent the immediate installation of SP3 but I did that with the other machines as well. The difference between the machines is that this one is XP Pro, the others are Home edition.

So, this remains free from SP3. Am I worried? No!

I use XP Home. I too noticed several long pauses in both the download and the installation. In fact I stopped the download when the blue scroll bar disappeared. When I tried the download again the blue scroll bar did not appear at first. I was away from the computer for a minute or two, and on my return the scrawl bar was back again. So far, as reported in another thread the computer does appear to be faster and smoother, although this could possibly be imagination on my part. :D

Anyway, since IE8 is just around the corner, why worry about IE7...?

Because it's certain to be late... then there'll be endless problems with it... That's why.

"A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush," as my grandmother used to say.

So if SP3 contains all the patches etc in SP2 then do we uninstall SP2 and the rest of the patches which will be repeated and clutter up the place?

If this is so - why dont they include a uninstall of these anyway?

Other programs update and roll over the old one or tell you to uninstall and then install new one.

why Cant M$ do it user friendly and not be so blooming mysterious and geeky

Enquiring minds need to know :D

Looking down that list there are only a couple of hotfixes that I need so I don't know whether to bother with SP3 at all

I thought that, when installed, it cleaned up all the previous SP3 separate patches or over-wrote them, so that you get an up-to-date new list showing in programmes?
