-pops- Posted August 25, 2008 Report Share Posted August 25, 2008 In Sainsbury's this morning and I noticed "Camp Chicory and Coffee Essence".I've not seen the stuff since I was a child when I knew it as "Camp Coffee and Chicory Essence" (note the change of order of ingredients to meet current regulations).I bought a bottle for old times sake and, yes, it does taste just as it did when I was young. Has it been resurrected or has it been around all the time and I've just not noticed?For youngster's information: Camp was around at the time of the Second World War and afterwards as a substitute for coffee, which was almost unobtainable, having to be imported. During the war, people used to make their own "coffee" from roasted chicory roots, roasted dandelion roots or roasted malted barley. At that time instant coffee had not been invented. I also remember the dire Co-op "sterilised milk" that she used to get, that came in a bottle with a rubber sealing washer and a spring clip. My mother would not buy Camp because it "wasn't real coffee"...but then she hardly ever bought real coffee.Like today's freeze dried powders, sold as "instant coffee", I feel it should just have been called "Drink".I seem to remember something from the not too distant past about the PC brigade objecting to the Punkah Wallah standing behind the Big White Man whilst he sat down. I have a feeling that the label artwork was changed as a result. It is strange that the PC brigade did not also insist on it having it's name changed to "Gay Coffee". catgate Posted August 25, 2008 Report Share Posted August 25, 2008 The Fray Bentos steak and kidney pie refered to in Alanho's link seems to predate the Argentinian trouble in my mind.I seem to remember it from the very early sixties along with another delectable tinned morsel, which I think had the same parentage, and which was known simply as Ham and Beans. It was a thickish piece of gammon accompanied by broad beans in a white sauce.Both these figured frequently during the weeks that I was the night foreman at the factory. There were no canteen staff so these were an ideal quick midnight feast. (Providing I remembered to nip down and put the oven on to preheat for the S&K pie. !) My parents knew someone who worked at Rowntree's in York and every few weeks/months a parcel of Black Magic or Dairy Box misshapes would be delivered.Note: Having just had my second cup of Camp drink, I don't think it will become a regular addition to my fluid intake. Watchful Posted August 26, 2008 Report Share Posted August 26, 2008 I bought some Camp coffee a couple of years ago for old times sake so I think it's always been around but you have to search for it.My favourite old remedy was Fenning's Cooling Powders. I love the taste dropped on a teaspoonful of milk.My husband loves the Fray Bentos steak pies but they're strictly off limits now as he's on a strict diet, for health reasons, and he's doing well.
