doug Posted September 12, 2008 Report Share Posted September 12, 2008 Have been sorting out my youngest daughter's family's internet connections. I'm at the stage of having got their desktop PC working better I'm now starting on her laptop which is wirelessly connected to the internet. Now this laptop runs XP Pro and has always been very slow. I've removed the Symantec stuff - I hope - using the Symantec removal tool. Then Installed AVG 8 free.Went online and updated the AVG. I then installed and updated Spybot Search and destroy and also downloaded Zone Alarm free, albeit slow. I was intending to then start progressively overhauling it. Left it with them yesterday and was immediately informed that it was performing like treacle. My thoughts are that there is obviously to much running. I'm intending to collect it this morning and start working on it by removing what I had recently loaded. As a dry run I've just removed Spybot S&D from my system which uses the same OS and noticed a dramatic improvement in overall response. Any suggestions will be very welcome. I have also unset the Tea Timer by clicking on the wording next to the resident tab, however I have left the "Resident SD helper as active.Do you think this is an adaquate setting or should i disable the " Resident SD Helper"?AlsoI note that on the Immunise report the Firefox elements are still unproteced, why? Maybe I should try uninstalling FF & downloading it again, it's definitely faster than IE for general internet surfing.In my experience Spybot runs best without the Tea-timer (which you don't need if you have another real-time anti-malware utility). The browser helper is effective for weeding out adware & similar malicious products. I think if you don't use that you're left only with the scanner plus a few other tools. That means no Tea Timer but with the Resident browser shield activated. But I also have ESET Smart Security which includes anti-virus and anti-malware.
