-pops- Posted April 29, 2009 Report Share Posted April 29, 2009 I had a little beige note waiting this morning on screen informing me that IE8 was ready for download.Never being hurried or rash about these things, I had a look around for opinions on this software and, not seeing any untoward comments, downloaded it this afternoon.After the machine had rebooted, not a sign of an Internet connection anywhere - not on Outlook nor any of the browsers I have. The diagnostics of the new browser, after spending ages supposedly looking for the reason for the lack of vitality, eventually told me to contact the computer manufacturer. What a waste of time that was - I built the computer myself and it has served me well for a number of years. For this pestilential program to tell me there was now something wrong with the machine when it worked perfectly well prior to its installation made me very angry. It made no suggestion whatsoever that it may have been the problem.Fortunately, I made a clone of my "C" drive yesterday. This is now installed and working as it should.Message: Be very careful if you install IE8. Make a backup/clone or System Restore point to ensure you don't have the same problem.The worst part of this is that I don't normally use IE and could have managed quite well without this new version - which I will now do. catgate Posted April 29, 2009 Report Share Posted April 29, 2009 That is a rather telling little story.This morning I had a little icon telling we that there was a dowload/update waiting. It turned out to be Firefox 3.0.01.I clicked on it and Ubuntu went and downloaded it, installed it, it cleared up after itself and then requested me to restart Firefox. -pops- Posted April 30, 2009 Author Report Share Posted April 30, 2009 I have now managed to install IE8 on my drive clone and the original drive (after removing the old install).This doesn't change the effect I originally reported - IE8 cocked up my system and my recommendation to do a full backup/clone before messing around with this still applies.
