johnnyscience
What do you guys think?I will more than likely get Windows 7 when it comes out, but I'm kind of hesitant to get a new OS before the first service pack comes out... look at what a nightmare Vista was.Now I feel that Vista is finally ok since it has a service pack out.But now Windows 7 is on the horizon. Also windows 7 doesnt have driver support...So should I just get Ultimate 64 now and just be safe and done with it? Or should I start getting familar with 7 now if it will be better than Vista when it comes out, even WITHOUT a service pack? This will be an HTPC. I may or may not need everything in Ultimate, but I figure why not.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
I don't know your situation, so it is very difficult to make a suggestion. Are you buying a new computer, or is this for an existing machine?Dell will start selling machines with Vista on it, but with an upgrade guarantee to Windows 7, once it is out.I personally don't want Vista anywhere, and will stay with XP for as long as possible. andsome
Upgrades of existing machine have caused a multitude of problems on this and other forums. Why bother? Too many people seem to feel the need always to have the latest in everything. Upgrade at your peril,it's your computer. :D

Is it compatible with Vista?Windows 7 is not really much different from Vista; in fact, Vista is Windows 6.0, and Windows 7 is in reality Windows 6.1 . Alan2273
If you look around, you will find certain outlets are selling Vista with a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it is released, so two operating systems for the price of one. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18025125
-pops-
My granddaughter is assessing Windows 7 and says it it Vista with bells on - From what I've seen of her test machine, I agree.Vista is a triumph of style over substance. It looks very pretty but it is mostly window(s) dressing. Underneath all of this gaudiness is a computer and that is where the basics lie. Do you want a machine which will function at its best for what you want it for or do you want a machine to create an impression and look nice without actually achieving anything more substantial than its predecessors? Windows 7 takes this to another level.

catgate
Windows development fascinates me, as does every other OS.There is very little that the ordinary person wants/needs to do that needs half the capabiity of a modern computer. In this country the simplest of computers will deal with the fastest of internet connections and games. The most complex business applications are childsplay to them. Who needs this mad progress, apart from the software and hardware makers?Omnia Vanitas.

johnnyscience
I think I'm going to give 7 a whirl. But can I easily/succesfully run my 4 montiors on it like I am currently on XP Pro?And what exactly does it mean to not "have driver support"?If Vista really does suck that much... the rumors of that are the reasons I'm still on XP, but I need a 64 bit OS other than Ubuntu 64 and figure might as well try something with a new interface.I currently have a 40g HDD with 2 20g partitions on it.One partition is PRo, the other is Ubuntu. Because I ran out of space, I'm completely moving the Ubuntu Parition to another HDD.So I then need to format the 40g to 1 full parition correct? At what point do I download 7?Should I download 7 and burn it to a disk, format my hdd & then boot up from the new windows 7 livecd I created? johnnyscience
Also, can I remotely access my computer with my iPhone with Windows 7?I know this is a feature offered in Ultimate and I 100% want to be able to do this with the next OS I pick. So 7 must have it, or Ultimate it is for sure.
-pops-
So Windows 7 will take us back to Win 98 then !!  :lol:That isn't quite what I implied. There have been a few technological developments since W98 - USB2 for instance but, as W98 proved, these can be added to the O/S via Windows update. Most of the other stuff in W7 is frippery for the impressionable and/or unwary.I much prefer to have an operating system which is just that. All additional software then added to my requirements and choice. The tendency with Microsoft is "borrow" good programs from independent developers, chop them about until they are a poor imitation of their original and shove this half working version into Windows. What we end up with then is a grossly overbloated "operating system" which still needs to have extra software because that already installed with the O/S doesn't fulfill expectations. At what point do I download 7?Should I download 7 and burn it to a disk, format my hdd & then boot up from the new windows 7 livecd I created? The RC of W7 is the Ultimate version but whether all of the projected refinements work is debatable. What Microsoft has done in the past is to herald all sorts of fancy bits on new systems only to abandon them in the final release. For download and install, go to the Microsoft Windows 7 download site, obtain a product key and follow the instructions for download, ISO disk burning and installation.Check before installing that your computer has at least the minimum requirements, preferably a lot more. It is a resource hog.
Sbrideau
Well, it actually depends on the computer. If I take my computer for instance, Vista runes MUCH better than Windows XP, I used to have a lot of bugs and program crashes on XP, while I never crashed on Vista yet (and I've had it for almost a year now). I found that Vista also runs better than Windows 7 on that computer, so I guess I know what OS to stick with. From that, I say try 7 at your peril, since every computer is different.I can't believe you guys are still saying that crap on Vista which has become a very good OS. Windows 7 has not been released yet, and you certainly can't judge an OS from its prerelease version.
Sbrideau
True, but I'm not willing to pay if I don't know if it's going to be faster or not.
Hb_Kai
I can't believe you guys are still saying that crap on Vista which has become a very good OS.Many of the people on here and other forums which you can easily find on Google have tried or used Vista and found it as unsuccessful as a kettle boiling cold water. I still don't get along with it and I try and keep an open mind when using it but that has to be one of the most hardest things I can do with the operating system besides using it. It may be stable for some but is most certainly not stable for others. The others, from what I've seen, happen to be the majority. This is off-topic just a little bit but is Vista's partition manager used in Windows 7? ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
You are trying to make it sound as if 'Ultimate' were an operating system, but it is not. There is a Vista "Ultimate" version. There is a Windows 7 "Ultimate" version. If a feature is available on Vista "Ultimate", then most likely it will be in Windows 7 "Ultimate". CurlyWhirly
I must be in the minority as I've had no problems with Vista on either of my 2 PC's !Regarding the Ultimate Edition of either Vista or Windows 7, I reckon it is overkill and the Home Premium Editions suit most PC users. johnnyscience
Ok I am just going to give 7 a whirl. How many gigs of HDD space is required to run 7 properly?I've fixed my HDD issues, I have roughly a 51g parition for windows. So can I just upgrade my current XP Pro through a download, or do I still need to make a disk and do it that way? johnnyscience
All you need to know is here:http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/download.aspxOk, so based on that I need to do a clean install as its called. Now XP Pro is on an 80g HDD that is split between it and Ubuntu. Ubuntu has about 20g partitioned for it.So when I do this "clean install" will it just re-do the XP Pro parition, or will it want to re-do both partitions?
