Coffee Shop

We had a trip to Filey to day. It was a very pleasant day and so off we went. We did not go the usual route, but instead went the pretty way, mainly via the lesser used B roads.

As we were travelling along I became more and more aware of how many small businesses, set up to tempt the passing trade, seem to be totally incapable of being/doing just what they claim to be/do, such as Gallery (for what?), Lavender Farm, Pick Your Own (noses were never mentioned), Garden Centre and lots of others, without having to have “and Coffee Shop” added to their sign.

It struck me as peculiar at first, but then I began wondered how other sorts of businesses would fare using the same plot. I began to visualise “Undetaker, Embalmer and Coffee Shop”, “Abattoir and Coffee Shop”, “Family Planning Clinic and Coffee Shop”, “Cat Neutering and Coffee Shop”, “Pile Clinic and Coffee Shop”.

It certainly makes one think.

You should have popped into one and ordered a cup of Yorkshire tea - that would have confounded them.....................

I take your point though - there truly are lots of small businesses who feel obligated, perhaps by "peer pressure" to set up a tea room cum coffee shop serving toasted tea cakes, sad sandwiches and so-called home made cakes/sponges.

Maybe we am unusual in that we like to make a few hours out of a trip to a garden centre, especially if it is one some distance from home. We enjoy looking at the plants, followed by a meal or a pot of tea or coffee and a cake. If there is an aquarium centre there so much the better.

What does annoy me is when supermarkets try to pinch all the locals business and close them down in the attempt. I refuse point blank to have anything to do with the modern supermarket trend to sell TV and allied electronic goods, cameras, clothes, DVDs and c d's, books, microwave cookers etc etc. :D

There was a program on the box a few years ago about a smallish American town that had been doing OK until Wall Mart moved in, they forced all the other local traders out of business and having turned the place into a ghost town decided it wasn't profitable and moved on.

Happens around here with Teso Express..........
