I must admit that I have empathy with the views expressed in this article. The present government has much to answer for about how the moral standards in British society have fallen apart over the last few years. They could well learn a lesson from how China deals with serious crime to protect its citizens.

Couldn't be bovered to read it all, it waffles on a bit but for the Mail to have a sensible opinion must be a first, if you brake the law and get caught then you have to do the sentence, a tad harsh but he could have sold it in this country and got a slap on the wrist so more fool him

I have no truck with drug traffickers, but it has been claimed that this man was mentally ill. I prefer to reserve judgement in this case.

It is an over used "get out of jail free" card these days. That having been said Westminster is still full of sectionables...as is the Chinese equivalent.

In my opinion anyone who traffics drugs is peddling death and deserves the appropriate punishment. Not only that, anyone who commits such a heinous crime knowing that the death penalty applies, must be mentally ill by definition - are we then to assume that anyone who commits a serious crime is mental - and therefore let them off.

From what I have read there is no recorded history of mental illness here - and his family were quite happy to let him roam around the World without their involvement. It looks like his illness started after he was arrested - tough luck.

If you look on the BBC news site at the readers posts on the topic - 1497 of them so far - over 90% agree with the Chinese and condemn our government - Brown in particular - for meddling.

My view is that this is a case of that overused phrase "lessons to be learnt" having some real meaning.

The lessons here being "Mess around with the Chinese system at your own risk and peril". Something for anyone thinking about doing similar things in the numerous countries where the drug laws are more stringent than they are here and the penalties for transgression are not just idle threats.

I also don't have enough information about this individual case to make a judgement about it. The penalties for dealing in drugs in most Asian countries are very severe and have been for many years and are well known. Rather than wasting energy objecting to China's inevitable decision in this case, the UK government should be urging the Polish government (where the criminals involved came from) to find the evil people who set this man up and sent him on his vile mission. But I bet they aren't doing anything because Poland is an ally and in the EU...

There is also another consideration. It would cost money and it would involve logical action, neither of which now exist in Westminster (expenses excepted).

The latest fatuous outpourings include increasing the price of alcohol to prevent Chavs getting drunk. So that everyone pays in order that the police do not have to do what they used to do years ago i.e arrest drunks and then put them through the courts and punish them for it. The suggestion that the drunks who end up in A&E through their own stupidity should be charged for their hospital addmission and treatment seems to be viewed as"anti Labour" for some warped thinkers.

The extra £15 to be added on to "statutory" on the spot fines, for the benefit of victims of crimes committed by persons other than the person being statutorily fined, is view as a good thing. Well I suppose someone has to fund duck huts and bell towers.

I suppose a diet of bogies eventually softens the brain, if one is present.
