MANEMAN Posted March 29, 2011 Report Share Posted March 29, 2011 We try to get away to Dartmoor for at least two weeks in every year. It's beautiful, it's wild, and as the light changes you see many different facets by just standing still in one place. These pictures were taken last spring, and we shall be up there again very soon. Although we live already in a rural area, it is so much different to Cornwall which relies heavily on the sea and the coast to display it's beauty. The wild horses and ponies have suffered recently due to the economic climate. There are a group of people trying very hard to keep the genetic line of one particular breed going.We can open the door of the cottage, and let our dog "Dusty" run free here without fear of traffic.I get just as much joy watching Dusty enjoying his holiday time, as I do enjoying my own vacation I think.If you would like to find out a bit more about Dartmoor please click ** HERE ** Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Mind if I use a couple as wallpapers?A while back there was a suggestion that I take some photographs for my desktop backgrounds. I assure you all that there is nothing like this anywhere near where I am. One of these days I'll be able to run free as Rusty. Every dog has it's day....(No offence to Rusty).I am envious. AlanHo Posted March 29, 2011 Report Share Posted March 29, 2011 Superb photos - you were obviously lucky with the weather.I have visited Dartmoor several times - but more than a few years ago when my legs and stamina were up to the task of taking long walks into the wilderness way off the access roads. You need to dive deep into the less trod areas to absorb the true beauty of the place - a pleasure now denied to me for health reasons. I am looking forward to getting back there one day. I have colour slides tucked away somewhere I'll try and dig them out and post them on here. The Eden Project has expanded considerably since I went a few years back. We are going back again later this year to see the plants in a different season. If you are interested in plants and gardens there is much to see outside the domes (which are spectacular). If you wear spectacles the tropical dome is a bit of a problem - mine kept steaming up - so take some tissues in your pocket. I had no mobility problems there despite my angina - I used the tractor train to go both up and down. It pays to get there early in the day if you can - the large car parks get very full and it is a long hike to the entrance if you arrive late in the morning.I agree with Alan2273 about the lost gardens of Helligan - we were totally underwhelmed and found the walk steep and tiring. I think it's just a case of "One man's meat is another man's poison" sometimes really Alan.What side of the bed you got out of, what sort of mood you were in at the time, the weather,etc; etc.We had some friends join us last year on Dartmoor. They stayed the day, and then headed off for where there were some shops ! They thought we were completely bonkers staying in the middle of nowhere. - Doubt they saw the flowers in the hedgerows, or the wild garlic growing. Doubt if they really wanted to, truth be known.I haven't been to either the Eden Project or The Lost Gardens of Heligan. ( http://www.heligan.com/ ) My wife has been to Eden, and in the long distant past I have been able to take her to heaven.I'm a bit of a sweaty ol' scrote at the best of times, so layering me in bubblewrap (The Domes) is not a good idea !You tend not to visit places that are right on your doorstep. - Strange that isn't it ?If andsome and his good lady get fed up, they can always sit around our place drink tea, or I may even break open the 1978 "Newcastle Brown" I have been saving.And yes that was an invite andsome. A couple of months back I spotted a USB powered Slide/Negative copier in a local supermarket and bought it, content of course in the knowledge that I knew where all of my old slides were. Well. - They are not at ground level ! He started clearing up the mess and cutting back, - and there they were. - Unlost ! :P Mine are at ground level, well on a few shelves at shoulder height. The trouble is I have thousands of Magazines at 96 slides per mag and not all the magazines are labelled. It's gonna be a long haul job I think. It has been a few years since we were in Cornwall. We toured in a six months old A35 van, so you can guess how long ago, We both love looking round gardens, and would definitely like to see the eden project.
