Well - we survived

Are you relieved or disappointed?

Doomsday came and went without a peep, as May 21 failed to bring about earthquakes, a rapture or the mass excavation of all the world's dead :)

The rumour that May 21 would kick off the end of the world was started and propagated by Harold Camping, the president of the Oakland, California based Christian radio broadcasting network Family Radio.

Camping, who also made a failed doomsday prediction in 1994, had claimed that his mathematical interpretation of the Bible pointed to May 21 as the day of the rapture.

Earthquakes were supposed to shake the globe, throwing the dead from their graves as believers' souls ascended to heaven.

Five months later, on Oct. 21, 2011, the universe is supposed to end.

It's all very well Harold Camping believing his prediction but how is it the many thousands of others, worldwide, also trusted his garbling?

Never underestimate the gullibility of your fellow man.

I recall an episode of The Simpson's that had a very close resemblance to this silliness.

Not the first time he's done it either. He sounds the sort of guy who'll start all over again, claim he's worked out what he did wrong with his latest set of calculations then come up with a new date and in the land of the free he'll find a flock.

Probably sincere but very very odd.

That about says it all for me. He's probably been watching too many Zombie films the US put out over there.

Well, if it's any consolation to Mr. Camping, there was a faint shaking here in Japan on Saturday. Unfortunately I didn't know then that the world was supposed to end on that day. (I found out later in the evening, when I had dinner with one of my American friends. [Not a believer.])
