Windows XP?!

Recommended Posts

Okay,

I am currently a Windows 8 User on a Lenovo flex 10 Touch. I had a desktop computer in my room for work so I could work in silence. That exploded last month. I am looking for a new desktop computer now! I saw one on Amazon UK but it runs Windows XP, is XP any good for work because I remember, my dad used at work and liked it. I don't really want to get a new computer and install a new Operating System on it. I know support has ended for XP but I would only use it for typing things up and using the Internet for research. So XP any good?

I'm surprised you can still obtain machines loaded with XP. Is it new or secondhand? If the latter, be very careful about its provenance and if it is still working.

If new, my opinion would be to buy it. XP is still the best operating system that Microsoft have produced. Little bit out of date, perhaps, but still able to "come up with the goods"

Windows XP still works fine, but as you rightly point out now without support from Microsoft, so any future security weaknesses are going to remain unplugged, also Microsoft antivirus will no longer update.

In order to use XP safely first make sure all existing security updates are installed.

Second make sure that a good XP compatible antivirus like avast or QiHoo is installed

Make sure the firewall is working

Add an independent browser such as Firefox or Chrome.

Deactivate Internet explorer as much as possible it's the main point of vulnerability.

For typing you may need an office suite if you don't have a spare Office disk check out Libreoffice

So in my opinion XP is still OK but the thing to remember is that an XP machine is likely to be getting on a bit and with the huge improvement in PC specs over the years would need to be really bargain basement price wise to be worth the risk.

It is the best from Microsoft and I still use it every day, Microsoft anti-virus will still update the nuisance is that it shows red all the time as they are trying to fob you off with W8. It does pay to check it on occasions though just to check. I also have W7 and use XP in preference.

If you are still using Windows XP you will be protected with MSE antivirus support until July 2015. From this month Microsoft will end support of their free Security Essentials software for the now "obsolete" operating system.
