AlanHo Posted October 4, 2017 Report Share Posted October 4, 2017 I was just looking at the news on the BBC web site and they reported that a Ryanair flight was diverted to Stanstead this morning due to a hoax bomb threat. It is accompanied by a photo of the plane with an RAF Tornado jet flying alongside to escort it there. So my question is - what is the point of the jet being escorted? - there is nowt the jet fighter could do if there was a serious incident. Belatucadrus Posted October 4, 2017 Report Share Posted October 4, 2017 I suspect the answer is shoot it down if it looks like it was going to divert into the Shard or the Gherkin, not a great deal of consolation to the passengers mind but after 11/9 probably accepted by the powers that be as a possible necessity. PS it's a Typhoon not a Tornado. I suspect the airliner was safe, depends which squadron was at the top of the roster to borrow the anti aircraft missile. Not so my friend - our cancelled trip was with Monarch. Fortunately I didn't pay with a debit card as I assumed - I paid with a credit card - so I should get a full refund according to Martin Lewis the money man.
