Sir T Fireball
Britons Caught on Camera 300 Times a DayBRITAIN is the most watched nation on earth with more than four million surveillance cameras monitoring our every move, new research has revealed. The number of CCTV cameras has quadrupled in the past three years and there is now one for every 14 people in the UK. It's thought Britain accounts for one-fifth of all CCTV cameras in the world.Estimates suggest that residents in a city like London are captured on cameras up to 300 times a day, often without knowing it.Civil liberties groups complain that the rules governing the use of cameras are the most lax in the world. They say that, in contrast to other countries, people are often unaware they are being filmed and are usually ignorant of guidelines. They also argue that there is little evidence that CCTV cameras lead to a reduction in crime rates. The CCTV report was complied by Professor Clive Norris, deputy director of the Centre for Criminological Research at Sheffield University.Professor Norris said: "We are the most watched nation in the world. One of the most surprising findings was how much more control there is in other countries such as America and France compared to Britain."CCTV is generally seen as benign rather than Big Brother-style surveillance. We need to have a much wider debate about what exactly CCTV is doing in terms of our privacy and society. It is about much more than crime. It enables people to be tracked and monitored."Over the last 10 years, the Home Office has handed out millions of pounds to councils and police forces to install cameras in the belief that they will reduce crime. But Barry Hugill of civil liberties group Liberty says CCTV fails to do this. "All it does is move crime to another area for a bit and then it returns. "If you asked most people they would rather see the Government spending the money on more police officers than on installing cameras, which do not appear to make much difference anyway," he said. However, Glen Smyth of the Metropolitan Police Federation believes cameras help the fight against criminals:"CCTV has helped bring some of the most dangerous offenders to justice and has had success in reducing crime rates. "Cameras seem to be considered sinners rather than saints by civil liberties groups, but I don't hear ordinary people complaining about them," he said.Extracted from AOL newsOnly 1 for every 14  I'd rather 14 for every 1 :)
