nellie2
Yes tyre thingy.......... I know what she means!!! And for everyone who is worried, the mirror on the drivers side has a little cover on it, so if I have the sun visor down while I'm driving I won't be distracted by myself!!! Of course I park the car....and turn off the engine before I do any preening  What is the point of having a pretty face if you are just going to bash it up in a road accident? djohn
I picked up my new car on Monday. Vauxhall Zafira auto in Silver lightning and it's got a "Thingy" on it as well. :P It's a computer controlled hoist that lifts my scooter up and then moves it into the rear of the car and sets it down. To remove it I press a a remote "thingy" and the scooter lifts up, moves out of the rear of the car and lowers itself to the ground ready for me to ride off into the sunset at the same time with a casual glance over my shoulder and a press of the "thingy" the rear door closes and the car locks itself. Just need to remember to give my wife time to get out of the car before I do it. Or maybe not! :lol:As soon as I work out how to up-load some photo's of it in action, I will :)

Emmadw
Sounds like a very handy thingy! Is it one of those cars where you can drive it while still on the scooter (though in fact I think I've only seen them where you drive your wheelchair in, and stay in it to drive, not driving a scooter in... (Though your thingy sounds a tad more complex than a drivers side vanity mirror with a cover over it!)Hey, Nellie, have you discovered the internal light yet, that you can just put on on the passenger side, so they can read the map in the dark, without dazzling you? nellie2
No I haven't........ I'm afraid directions when I'm driving go along the lines of.... you should have turned right there...... Or turn left.... just as I am going past the junction..... things can get a bit fraught B)
ranger
Nell, I'm glad you picked a Clio and not a Polo, as I mentioned in a earlier post to your thread my daughters Polo's pedal box collapsed and we were told by a local garage that should never happen to a car of that age (just under 4yrs)well despite arguing this with Volkswagen all week, they have only agreed to pay 50% of the labour charge, they say it is wear and tear, some things that come to mind on this are,If it was a car not looked after, I could maybe, just maybe accept this, but it has had every service by a main Volkswagen dealer since birth.Wear and tear on a non moving part, not usual.if it is normal wear and tear, why pay anything towards it.does this mean that Volkswagen expect all of their cars to have this problem at under 4 years old/ 40,000 miles, if so, steer clear of them. Why woul a local non main dealer garage who were asked to find out what was wrong and give a quote to fix the car and would probably have been given the job to do so, lose themselves money and tell us to take it to volkswagen as it shouldn't happen to a car that age or mileage if they didn't believe it was a manufacturers fault, as I stated in the earlier post they have only ever seen this problem in Golfs well over 10 years old.And now to top it off the main dealer who were fixing the car have broken something to do with the airbag and are saying that it will take £150 to fix and that it was like that when it was taken to them, it wasn't, to fix the pedal box, they had to take out the steering column and they have obviously broken it then, but are trying to charge us for their incompetence, as you can imagine myself and my daughter are totally pi**ed off with Volswagen and their dealer. I suppose the one good thing that has come out of it is, my car is due for renewal later this year and I was seriously thinking of purchasing a VW Golf, this will now be crossed from my shortlist.I f only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen - NOT! nellie2
Oh dear..... it sounds to me as if you should try to take this further. You should not have to pay for a garages' incompetence and Volkswagon should seriously consider if they want a garage like that to represent them........ I would start writing some strong letters

ranger
We had a conversation with the manager over the phone and told them we weren't prepared to pay the £150 for the part needed for the airbag, lo and behold by the time we got to the dealer they had looked at the car again and discovered they had wrongly wired something in the steering column and it didn't need a new part after all, I wonder if we would have been told this if we had agreed to pay for the new part without argument

djohn
The issue with the Airbag is very suspect ranger. I'm pleased that you didn't have to pay in the end but the main issue here is the "Pedal box". I do hope you are going to take this matter further with trading standards. How can a company the size and with the reputation of Volkswagon lay the blame on wear and tear? Surly this particular part is designed to last longer than four years? If so, then the blame will lie either with faulty servicing or a sub-standard part being fitted in the first instance. If neither of the above apply then this leaves only one conclusion. Volkswagen designed the part with an intended life cycle of four years or less. Why would they do this? Even the paintwork/Body corrosion and exhaust system has a longer life cycle warranty than this.Coming back to the "Pedal box" how on earth do they expect one to use the brake/clutch/accelerator without putting [fair] wear and tear on the components?I don't know if Volkswagon are the same as Vauxhall in the fact that Vauxhall use a special Pedal box that is designed to collapse and come free in case of an accident. This is to help prevent damage to/or trapping of the feet in the foot-well. Worth looking into I think.

ranger
I have emailed Volkswagen with my dissatisfaction as I was getting nowhere with their customer services, have heard on some of the car forums that Volkswagen tend to just offer 50% of labour if a car develops a fault when car is just out of warranty and don't budge on that.As for the main dealer, I don't think I will be using them again, this is the scond time in a year I have had a bad experience with them, but just put the first down to "one of those things that happen" To give credit where it's due, the dealers warranty dept were very competent, nice and did seem to try their hardest to get Volkswagen to foot the whole bill for the pedal box.Nel, after the trouble I had with the airbag on the Polo, couldn't believe it when the airbag warning light came on on my Clio, my car is still under warranty so it was no problem for me to take it into Renault and get it fixed. The Renault dealer informed me it is a wiring problem common in all Clios, under the drivers seat there is a electrical wiring block and the wires come loose, Renault dealers just cut of the block and solder the wires together, have since asked four other people who have Clios if they had had this problem, all but one had, also asked a mechanic from a different Renault garage and he confirmed that this was a common fault, and in fact he had just bought a new Clio and the first thing he did was cut of the block and solder the wires, I never thought to ask if they repaired it FOC for cars out of warranty, but by the sounds of it, it should be, if it is a second hand car you have bought that is out of warranty, there is always a chance that it has already been fixed, but this was really just to let you know that if your airbag light comes on there is a good chance that this is what the problem is. mark2
Regarding the pedal box problem, maybe a letter to one of the major motoring magazines will throw some light on this. Posssibly they have come across it before or even helped someone in a similar situation.Just a thought, VW may not like adverse publicity in the likes of Auto Express et al ? nellie2
Ha.... funny you should say that... the airbag warning light started flashing about the 2nd day I had it home!!! But I have a 12 month warranty from the place I got it from.... I shall be having words about that when I have sorted the other problem out. You won't believe this, when I got the car they had problems getting the code in the radio, so in the end they took it out and said they had to put it on their computer to recode it or something and they would ring me in a couple of days and I could go back and they would fit it.... OK..... I was going to ask for travel money!!!.. but no phone call. So I rang them and in the end (after being given a bit of a runaround)... got through to customer services. I got a very nice young lady to start with...NOT... who launched into.. well it is a second hand car and you cant expect... blah blah blah. I'm afraid I saw red because I have paid quite a bit for this car, second hand or not. So I very politely explained again and was put on hold ...... she got back to me to say that she would need to ring me back after she had been in touch with the service dept. Ok I said but I was going out she would have to leave a message on the machine. The message said that because I didn't have controls on my steering wheel that the radio was incompatible and that I should go to a dealer and get a quote for a replacement and have it faxed thought to them to be authorised. So I rang back to say I did have controls on the steering wheel and it wasn't convenient for me to do all this running around and I felt like I was being fobbed off etc. Unfortunately the service dept was closed by then so I was advised to ring back the next day.... which I did but all the computers were down so although and email was sent off... nothing much else could be done.Rang back on Monday and..... guess what..... explained it all again and eventually was told that the service dept would give me a ring when the radio was ready. Yep.... no phone call so far...... ho hum, will ring again tomorrow!!!!!
andsome
It takes the shine off to a certain extent Nellie. I have lost count of the number of times I have got as far as the day before going to the small claims court, before firms have finally capitulated. Stick at it , but put your complaints in writing and keep a copy. Best of luck.

Michelle
It's a shame that someone with VW's past solid reputation for reliability is not quite as good as say 10-15 years ago. I suppose many car makers have cut corners on quality parts to save money. I found out from Which that Japanese cars are the most reliable nowadays. I've got a Pajero.
