Blonde trivia

Aphrodite was the first universal blonde, the world’s original model of sexual fantasy and power. The working girls of Greece went to great lengths to imitate her golden-blonde hair. Phryne, a powerful courtesan born in about 370 BC, plundered much of her sexual imagery from Aphrodite. Phryne’s reputation and wealth were considerable but the growing number of conquests and the trial of ruined men left in her wake brought her up against an all-male court. The case seemed lost until in a last ditch effort, her defence ripped open her dress in court to reveal her naked breasts, claiming that to press charges would be akin to bringing charges against Aphrodite herself. It was a knock-out argument. The judges immediately dropped all Charges

Rumour has it that Celopatra was a blonde.

Blonde wigs were extremely popular for men and women alike in the Roman Empire. The feared Emperor Caracalla once wore a blonde wig to ingratiate himself during a visit to a settlement of German tribesmen, and Faustina the Elder wife of Emperor Antoninus Pius, is said to have gone through three hundred blonde wigs in nineteen years. German women were even taken captive in order to have their hair stolen and made into blonde wigs for fashionable Roman ladies.

In the Middle Ages, blonde hair, especially dyed blonde hair, was condemned as a sign of female temptation, depravity, and evil. Mary Magdalene and the Whore of Babylon were regularly depicted with blonde hair, and suddenly in the fourteenth century Eve, symbol of all that was wrong with women, started being portrayed as a blonde. Adam , on the other hand, was always described as a brunette.

Queen Elizabeth I was born with auburn hair, but by the time of the Armada portrait (1588), she had taken to wearing a blonde wig for her greying locks.

The original ‘dumb blonde’ was the famously vacuous Parisian courtesam Mademoiselle Rosalie du Thé. Her stupidity was the subject of a 1775 one-act play by the French playwright Landrin entitles Les Curiosités de la Foire.

A famous propaganda pamphlet distributed by the Nazis read, ‘Hitler is blonde, has rosy skin and eyes, and therefore is of pure (Aryan) Germanic nature, and all the other rumours concerning his appearance or personality have been sown into the soul of the people by the black or red press.’

In the 1930s the world’s three most dynamic nations – Germany, the United States and the Soviet Union – saw the rise and rise of the blonde ideal.

The 1931 film ‘Platinum Blonde’, starring Jean Harlow, sparked a peroxide revolution: suddenly, everyone in Hollywood was blonde. However, blondeness still carried the inevitable stamp of promiscuity. As Margot Asquith quipped after Harlow asked about the pronunciation of her first name, ‘Like Harlow. It has a silent "t".’

Victims of the famous Clairol 1960s ad campaign for a blonde rinse included Betty Friedan and David Hockney, who allegedly rushed out of his apartment in the middle of the night to buy a bottle after seeing the ad on the television.

‘True Blue’, Madonna’s first album as a blonde, sold twenty million copies worldwide. Her previous albums, for which she’d been brunette, sold five million.
