nellie2
I don't know if any of you have any recommendations for wine that is easy on the purse.I don't know anything about wine apart from does it taste nice and what percentage is it. But today I went over to the off license and bought a bottle of Ernest & Julio Gallo Rose for three pounds and something or other.... anyway it is really nice!!! B) Fruity and light ... and I have had about half the bottle so far! :D

Sir Radfordin
www.superplonk.com (not available at the moment?) has a nice tool where you say where you shop, what you want to spend and it tells you what to buy.
catgate
Also from Aldi a beautiful sweet German wine. Niersteiner Domtal Spate Laser, less than £2 but absolutely delightful when chilled.
AlanHo
We have a bottle of wine every evening with dinner - sometimes a little more. Our favourite is a Valdivieso Chilean Cab Sav from Tesco at £5.07 per bottle. However - I go to Tesco in Calais via Eurotunnel every 6 months and bring back 220 bottles per trip plus spirits etc (maximum weight the car will safely carry). The same wine there costs £1.77 - depending on the exchange rate.220 bottles in UK costs £1,115220 bottles in France... £390Difference ................... £726Less petrol ................. £50Less Eurotunnel ......... £39Overall saving ............ £637For me it's a no brainer - plus you can enjoy a day out and a very nice lunch in France as well
andsome
I think you get what you pay for with wine. Duty is not a percentage of the price, but a basic rate per bottle. So for every penny that you pay over the price of a bottle of plonk, you get a full pennyworth of wine value. I use Laithwaites, and have it delivered by the case. They are not the cheapest around, but are ALWAYS reliable. They frequently have special offers, and bin ends. I have never yet had a suspect bottle from them. I don't buy the expensive range, but reckon on an average of about £5 per bottle delivered.
-pops-
I think you get what you pay for with wine. The same applies to most, if not every, thing(s).I work on the idea of getting the best you can afford and, although I'm a non-drinker, I would expect the same to apply with booze - possibly even more so. And is it also applicable to value-for-money government, taxes, banking charges, ???

-pops-
I was considering the concrete, not the abstract.Discounting the apparent slight upon Mahler which I don't fully comprehend, the other examples given are forced upon us and are not matters of choice. andsome
There is no way that we ever get value for money with our taxes, or for that matter bank charges. Just consider the miserly interest that the banks pay for saving accounts, combined with 0.1% interest on current accounts. Then consider the exorbitant interest charged by the banks on credit cards. catgate
Discounting the apparent slight upon Mahler Apologies for persieved "slight"...none intended. It seemed that both you Mahler (etc) enthusiasts had the same view, and I wondered if it came as a package with the Mahler Appreciation Societies welcome pack. :)
