I firmly believe that all this talk from the countryside alliance about needing to control the fox population is a load of pig swill. If foxes need to be controlled, why than do many hunts actually capture or breed foxes, so that they can be released and chased to their death? Why do these same people smear blood from dead foxes onto children's faces? Foxes and deer can be controlled by marksmen. The hunting lobby's answer to this is that a marksman may not make a clean kill at the first attempt. Do they HONESTLY believe that chasing an animal for several miles across country until it falls exhausted is any better? Another argument is concerning the unemployment that a ban would cause. If this is the case, THEN SO BE IT, people should NOT in my opinion be earning a living by torturing animals.

How about a one year moratorium ? That's just long enough to see what happens to the fox populations and short enough to keep the hunting animals and industry intact  pending a review.

The suggestion is for a two year hold. I see NO point. Animals are needlessly suffering all the time. Why can't these people drag hunt, others do? I note that someone has voted against a ban, do you have the courage of your convictions, to try and justify this barbarism?

This is really an issue which, generally speaking, is debated from the heart rather than from the mind. I am neither "pro" nor "anti", because I think that in things of this nature it is up to the concience of the individual as to whether he/she takes part, and it is wrong to force ones concience on to others by means of pressure groups. Consider what sort of support the Animal Rights lot would have got if the Fox and the Deer had not figured in so many childrens stories. Their "cuddliness" and Potteresque nature contributes enormously to their support. The number of these animals killed each year is infinitesimal when compared to the death and suffering caused by the biggest blood sport in the country.....coarse fishing. The number of people fishing is ginormous, ( I once saw the figure of 17% of the population quoted) and the number of fishes killed is also huge. Larger still is the number of fishes that die due to injuries caused by foul hooking, careless handling etc. However these creatures do not figure in fairy stories, and in any case are a food species and therefore don't count.

I just wonder how long it will be before some bright person comes up with the compassionate idea of reintroducing the wolf and the wild boar back into the countryside. ( Along with illegal immigrants and asylum seekers. )

Have you got proof about the huge numbers of fish killed by anglers? I think you will find that the biggest killer of coarse fish in this country is in fact polllution.

This could well be true, but is getting off topic. I am surprised that at the time of typing this post, there have been 70 views of this topic, and only a handful of people have bothered to express an opinion. Does this mean that most of the forum members couldn't care less, or does it mean that most of them support hounding animals to their death, and are ashamed or afraid to say so and own up in open forum?

I think you will find the facts are correct, however, I do know what you mean about polution. I was recently at the point where the Leeds/Liverpool canal joins the river Ouse, and was appalled to see that the surface of the water was covered with sick and dying fish. Then I suddenly realised that if someone had not tipped all that sick into the water the fish would not be dying.

I'm not afraid to express my views on the subject.

I care about all animals, even cats. We feed the garden birds and also provide food to the foxes and badgers that come into our garden each evening. We have the plumpest tits and finches in the County - no doubt the reason why sparrow hawks frequent the garden for their breakfast and late lunch. The only animals I draw the line at is slugs and snails - I hate them with a vengeance and kill them without a conscience. I take great pleasure in sitting in the conservatory both day and night, often with a glass in my hand, watching all the wildlife.

I also care about preserving our country and countryside and the traditional English culture. I believe that if country folk want to maintain their traditions - including foxhunting - then so be it - but the trade off must be for them to be required to properly maintain the countryside. This would prevent them from turning small fields into huge hedge less and treeless prairies and would bring an end to the indiscriminate use of pesticides, hormones in feedstock and chemicals. If country lovers want to fall back on their traditional rights - then they should not be allowed to cherry pick from the menu of traditions - it should be all or nothing.

Do you mean your facts or edbanger's, if so can you point me to a web site or written article that backs up your statement?. At the beginning of August over 100,000 fish were killed by pollution in the river Thames. This is just one incident out of hundreds that occur every year.

As someone who regularly visits the countryside, I can honestly say that I have never seen a fisherman with 2, let alone a 100,000 dead fish in his vicinity.

I am for a total ban of hunting. I find it very hard to justify a reason to allow this inhumane and disgusting "sport". Infact, let's not call it a sport, a sport is meant to be enjoyed by ALL parties taking part. I'm SURE the fox does not enjoy being chased to a grueling death.

Re: Fish, I have to say that most fish are caught for food, foxes are not caught for human food.

I haven't voted as I'm not that bothered at present. I am of the opinion that fox hunting is not a reasonable thing for an enlightened society to endulge in. However I was just seeing to my wife and the news was on showing the invasion of Parliament was being shown. Does not help the hunting cause one bit.

I've been fishing since I was nine years old, (17 years ago) and I've had to listen to garbage along these lines all this time!

"Biggest Blood Sport in the Country"
???????? Not only is that a harsh summise, but is total rubbish.

and the number of fishes killed is also huge

Compared to what? Let me tell you, a fish dying through being hooked and landed by a fisherman is an extremely rare occurrence! I have never heard of this happening at all!

Most fish die as a result of either enviromental issues or as a result of disese. Everyone who fishes is required by law to obtain a Fishing Rod Licence which costs £23 a year, £1 of this goes on administration costs and the rest of it goes to the Enviroment Agency, they get millions of pounds every year from rod licences and it all goes to protecting the fish and waters/lakes from such things as pollution and disese. They do an excellent job. And belive it or not, most diseses are caused by rodent excreation seeping into the water!

Sorry for going O/T but I'm sick of hearing about fishing being a Blood sport!!

BTW I voted Total Ban to fox hunting!

I started fishing when I was in my early twenties (well over 50 years ago). I stopped in my thirties because it suddenly became clear to me that in certain waters fish could be observed "avoiding" drifting bait. They had become educated. This education could only have come about by ....we all know what. This, coupled with the damage that I and others caused through ripping fishes mouths, due to hooks pulling out, because the fishes did not wanting to be caught or landed, or playing bigger fishes untill they were knackered and just gave up the ghost etc etc., made me view the matter differently. It was always sad to see fishes drifting down stream in the canal, belly up, after a big fishing match. I gave up "sport" fishing and only fished at the coast thereafter, for eating purposes. I would not wish to ban fishing, it is up to the individual and his view of the matter. I merely mentioned it as another form of "sport" that could be decried by the "do gooders" of the world.
