The packs have power surge built in. But lighting damage can occur not only through the power line but also through phone or cable lines. Unless you disconnect all of them during lighting storms your computer remains at risk.My UPS has a phone line protection circuit but whether it actually would work in a storm I dunno :unsure: I wouldn't really want to take the risk to be honest!I know that the UPS works okay when there is a power cut, as I have witnessed it in action and it gave me enough time to shut the PC down properly. If so you may want to let your friend know that Dell has just issued a recall of the power cords on their Latitude laptops.Not quite, it was a Dell Inspiron and they had problems with the transformers overheating I think.It's now a matter between the Insurers and Dell I think.
