I am off tomorrow with my wife and my sister for a week in a gite in the Champagne-Ardennes region of France.

It is close to Epernay and all the big Champagne houses and is situated in a small wine growing village, We shall drive around having modest lunches and good relaxing dinners.

No more computers until we get back on Sunday week.

Be good.

Thos.

Thanks for all your good wishes. The trip went very well. A principal reason for going was to give a break to my older sister whose husband and my best friend died a short time ago after a two year illness, during which time she cared for him with the most intimate of chores. I do hope my end comes without the lingering lack of dignity which many have to suffer.

I found a gite near to Epernay and located it on Google Earth which had surprisingly good resolution. It was very comfortable and was owned by a Champagne producer with his vines stretching out over the slopes at the back. The production was very good too and we brought back a case.

We visited a couple of the major producing houses, Piper-Heidseick and Champagne Mercier. We picked on them because they had small trains running around their cellars and it saved the legs. At the tastings, both were good, but Heidseick was superb.

We had better weather than we had a right to expect in late October, picnicking out on baguettes etc. every day and dining on "Moules au Champagne et Frites" for example in the evenings.

Only 3 hours from Calais, it was a good spot to have an autumn break.

Now the piccies. Here are a couple. One of the immense Mercier barrel and the other of my sister( the white haired lady) my wife and, in the middle, the gite owner with her small daughter and finally my wife and myself outside the Piper-Heidseick place.
