Chris Posted March 23, 2006 Report Share Posted March 23, 2006 Dell announced today it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Alienware to further satisfy the growing number of consumers and businesses seeking the highest-performance PC products, including those used for gaming and multimedia digital content management. Terms of the planned purchase will not be disclosed.Dell said Alienware will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary following completion of the transaction and will maintain its own product development, product marketing, sales, technical support and other operations as well as brand. The management and founders of Alienware will continue to operate the company as a standalone unit of Dell. "Alienware's products are an excellent complement to Dell's own line of high-performance computers designed for gaming, enthusiast and media content customers. In addition to offering high-quality, high-performance products, Alienware has tremendous brand appeal with consumers and creative business professionals," said Michael Dell, chairman. We now have purchased 3 from them and I will not have a problem purchasing another.As a side note, although it took some time on the phone Dell gladly replaced my sons LCD monitor that came with a slight scratch on the screen. Thos Posted March 23, 2006 Report Share Posted March 23, 2006 I don't know Alienware but I do know that there are plenty of folk starting up who would like to buy a cheap computer to see if they can take advantage of the technology and will spend a few pounds or dollars to get one. Dell seems to provide this entry and plenty are satisfied. Not everyone has a budget to stretch beyond Dell even though the build has drawbacks.Thos. -pops- Posted March 23, 2006 Report Share Posted March 23, 2006 I'm having difficulty understanding some of the views expressed here.Whatever your, or my, personal view is of Dell it has to be admitted that they are ordinary, run of the mill builders and relabellers of ordinary run of the mill computers and associated items. Conversely, Alienware have a reputation of building very high quality machines using the best parts available. Obviously this comes associated with a price tag to match and their customers are prepared to pay this.It matters not what assurances are being given by Dell that things will continue as they are. Business being business, at the first sign of a downturn, no guesses who will be for the chop.What invariably happens with takeovers of this nature is that the smaller company (in this case Alienware) sooner or later disappears and all that is left is the mediocrity of the larger concern. The customer loses out by reduced choice being obliged to buy a lesser item than he (or she) might otherwise have done.Is it suggested, using the similar analogy, that all of us should own and drive the same quality of car? My overall personal experience with them is positive and I would have no problem purchasing another. I only wish they would improve their customer service.Processors, sound cards and video cards are from leading manufacturers. You can customize your unit with a good selection of hardware to choose from. Upgrading is also not a problem.Just trying to set the record straight. scuzzman Posted March 24, 2006 Report Share Posted March 24, 2006 Oh, do not get me wrong DW, Dell computers work fine - until you have a problem that is. I personally own a Dell - it's my server PC. Works like a dream, but that's because I've never called their tech support excepting one case. The time I did call though, they not only didn't tell me how to solve my problem, they told me I didn't want to know (for the record - I wanted to disable their boot splash screen)!Dell manufacturers average computers for the average user. They do make the XPS system, which is an OK gaming rig, but it cannot hold a candle to an Alienware. I'm just saying I hope they don't "consumerize" the Alienware name.
