Sign of the times I'm afraid. I certainly would NOT like to be on the road nowadays trying to find industry to sell to.

This sort of thing is of no real consequence.

We, in the UK, are part of the fifth richest country in the world and in spite of the comments here and elsewhere in this forum its citizens are well fed and prosperous compared with some parts of the world. We can and should be able to ........

But can you imagine what would have happened if it had been our shutting a factory in France

The taxes are higher in France. Let's face it , that is where they want the production. France has always been isolationist, even within the EC.

With up to 1800 jobs going at Land Rover this year, 2300 at peugeot next year and 6000 lost at Rover last year.

I once had one of their earlier 3 wheelers with a "dog eared" 1100cc ohv J.A.P. engine in it. It was well into its middle age when I aquired it but it was a super toy.

Yes dreadful isn't it, in a cut-throat business they look after their own, it's well .......... quite sensible really. Wish some of our lot would do that instead of whittering on about the global economy then giving all the jobs to China or India.

Since I posted earlier, I now understand that this car production is being routed to the Balkans where labour is cheap, so it may not be a French isolationist solution after all.

Incidentally although the UK doesn't have a major British car owner any longer, we produce more cars in the UK, 1.6 million, than ever before. Though the profits go to Japan, that is some major income for the economy.

Is it "manufacturing"?

Ryton was more of an assembly plant and one of the reasons for closure was the cost of transport of heavy gearboxes and engines from their French plants to Ryton.

I used to do damned good business there selling Ostrich Feather brushes to the paint shop. I seem to recall they were about £18,000 or so per set.

Oddly enough, one of the problems there, I understand, was the decrepit paint shop. Peugot kept promising to build a new modern one, but kept putting it off. Now they won't have to.

It wasn't the best. Halewood and Ellesmere Port were better. I used to sell the same Ostrich Feather brushes to them also. I did well on those brushes for commission.
