How do you backup then?

Here's mine...

Clear the caches/cookies of the following...

  • Opera
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • Netscape Browser
  • Internet Explorer

Update the following applications...

  • Ad-Aware SE Personal
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy
  • Windows Defender
  • NOD32

Windows Update is also run!

Delete the contents of the following...

  • %TEMP% Folder
  • Recycle Bin

I also delete index.dat files via safe mode.

Tidy up Outlook 2003...

  • Delete Junk Mail Folder
  • Delete contents of custom folders

I then run in the following order...

  • Ad-Aware SE Personal
  • Spybot - Search & Destroy
  • Windows Defender [full scan every 4th week]
  • NOD32 [in-depth every 4th week]
  • Defrag
  • Drive Image 7
  • Run a batch file that backups a few things...
  • Manually copy 2 folders

Backup for the week complete!

Every 3 months...

  • Backup ALL to DVD [currently takes 10 DVD's, but I have some new DL disks ;) ]
  • Backup ALL to secondary external HDD

Ccleaner, malware scans then Acronis backup to its own hard drive.

Only after that I do updates, install new software and whatever else wants doing that might, just might, adversely affect the smooth running of my machines.

I run Crap Cleaner every day, and one of either SUPERAntispyware, A Squared, or Ewido. Nod 32 I run now and then when I think about it. I backed up the HD a few weeks ago to Acronis, but don't feel the need to do it again yet, as there has not been much in the way of Windows updates etc, and I can easily update all the anti Malware programs after using Acronis should I need to. I have uninstalled Spy Defense, Adaware and Spybot S & D. I feel that the anti Malware programs that I run at present are better than those that I have uninstalled.

I hope you two Chris and curlywhirley, keep your previous backus handy ;)

I always have 2 backups to fall back on, well in fact 3 as I also have XP in a 'virgin' state i.e. no applications, programs or drivers installed as it saves me having to reinstall Windows if the need arises.

Cos you do imho the most scariest things, Windows update and registary cleaning  before your backup ?

I don't see how running a registry cleaner before backing up is bad?

I run a registry cleaner which is safe and I have been using it for the last 4 years with no problems ;)

I just feel that playing about with the registry must be the biggest cause of PC problems

Well not in my experience so perhaps I have been lucky

and windows upgrades the next. ;)

If you are referring to Vista then when it's eventually released, I will be installing it on a new PC and not upgrading from XP, as I agree with you that it can cause problems.

I have 4 Images of my HDD at certain points...

1) Right after XP has just installed.

2) Right after WU are installed.

3) Right after certian applications have installed.

4) EVERYTHING is installed tweaked, you name it.

Then a new image every week to fall backon.

I don't run a registry cleaner, they're a waste of time IMO.
