I guess building and operating locks there would be much more expensive. One company operates the entire river (the fleet AND the lift). Looks like the barges were specifically made to fit the lift. As far as I can tell from their website, the charge is approximately $30-50 per metric ton per 1000 (that's THOUSAND) miles, lift included. There are major mining and timber businesses there, but no other major means of transportation. He had worked in Africa on Oil Rig Supply Boats for years for a company called Tidewater Marine...But then again he told me as a child that a local cemetary was "the dead centre" of where it was and I went to school telling them all that it was "smack bang in the middle of the town" and they believed me???He's a real "slowtimer" and a "windup"...and kids are so gullable aren't they? Based on the principle that they used 100 or so years ago to get the barges to Ironbridge from the canal, except most of the construction was wood.
