catgate
This may be of interest to some members:-http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/IDcards/I suppose if insufficient people object he will say that the majority agree that it is a "good thing". andsome
This is a subject that I have difficulty in forming an opinion on. I have no real objection as such to an I.D. card, but would certainly NOT want to pay the proposed price. I would welcome ONE card which could take the place of all the other cards that I currently carry. I have at present,Visa card, Bank debit card, Mobile phone top up card, Nectar card, Two garden centre senior citizens discount cards, Matalan card, Tesco club card, Nectar card, B and Q Diamond card, Taylors shop discount club card, and an Air miles card. I also have a Crown Green registration card, and a bowls club membership card. How nice to be able to replace all these with just ONE, including ID, until of course the day comes when I may loose it.P.S. This petition won't achieve a thing, it won't be seen by enough people.

Thos
I am with andsome on this one.I support wholeheartedly the concept of citizens carrying ID cards. But I am opposed to having to pay for them directly. They should be funded by taxation. There is no direct analogy with the funding of passports which are only needed if you travel overseas. Payment through taxation should also keep ID cards simple, it would be too easy for the authorities to add exotic requirements if they are not going to provide the money to pay for them.As far as petitions are concerned, any government which takes much notice of a petition is abrogating responsibility.Thos. If we had a true democracy the government should be asking the population if it wanted ID cards, not saying "You will have them, and will pay through the nose for the privilege, we say so, and we know best." Some people sign anything thrust before them.2. They don't necessarily think about the topic.3. They often sign several times. (At every visit to a supermarket, for example)The arguments for a referendum, however, properly conducted, are persuasive. Then you may get a truer indication of "the wishes of the population".Thos. mark2
I have a couple of problems with the suggested biometric ID cards.who has access to all this information the govt is accruing?how secure will it be ?who will they sell it too ?and who watches the watchers ?Currently I can identify any uk registered vehicle with a few clicks of a mouse, courtesy of this information being sold off by the DVLA.When the NHS database gets up and running, How much will a life insurance company be prepared to pay for indentifiable patient infomation held ?However past performance of the various govt depts with such IT projects suggest it will overrun by several years and billions, we'll all pay through the nose, and i don't trust any statement they make regarding costs.Slightly off topic and at a tangent but an example,Some of you will know I'm an MOT tester, several years ago VOSA upped the prices for MOT certificates (book fee) to the garages by 80% in one increase, about the same time a special notice was issued stating that there were to be no increases to cover the cost of computerisation. HOWEVER very recently a VOSA sponsored publication stated something along the lines of " we don't envisage an increase in the cost of the book fee to cover computerisation as this was covered by a previous increase"SO, we know they tell porkies, and we've just had an increase of approx 18% in the book fees, cynically I'm expecting another rise shortly ( to cover the cost of computerisation)
catgate
I think your experience has been shared in many ways by thousand upon thousand of the citizens of this realm. What to do about it is a problem. However, bigger than this problem is the other problem of apathy, which seems to cover the land like treacle.I suspect in many other, more volatile, countries there would have been,, by now some sort of uprising. But that's not the "British" way...is it?There is one thing for certain, no other party will ever get in again by simply promising to eradicate sleaze. In this case it looks like we will pay twice. For andsome it would be/was no different with your lot.

I just particularly dislike B'liar and his cronies.
