Can some kind Forum member please post an idiots guide to the inclusion of graphics and animations in forum posts.

I know how to insert an attachment which produces a thumbnail in a post which can be clicked on to expand it for viewing. I usually use .jpg images stored on my computer - but are any other file types admissable and what about animations. Any size limits?

I know how to include a link to another website using the insert link button - but am not sure what the insert image button is all about - or insert Email for that matter.

But how do people insert in their post huge graphic images like screen shots or moving images. Also, how do they include multiple images and get them properly positioned on the page.

Dumb aren't I - but anxious to learn

I have a problem with that too.

I do not have a web site nor do I upload pics to anywhere - like photobucket (?)

I think the "normal" way of showing an image is the way you described: upload it, then insert it into the post, generating a thumbnail with a link to the full picture.

Images below a certain size (e.g. icons) will display directly, without a thumbnail. I don't know if there are any size limits for individual images, but there is a total size limit per user - subscribers having a bit more space.

The other way is using the Insert Image button, which will insert and display directly an image hosted elsewhere, e.g. at the popular http://www.imageshack.us/ website. Once you upload an image there, it will generate different BBcode layouts for use in fora like this. This can also be a thumbnail that links to the original image, or the image directly.

I don't know if there are any downsides of using sites like Imageshack. Do these images expire - I don't know.

Regarding size limits and image types, I hope one of the admins will clarify this.

Just learned a bit more. I deleted the image from the Image Shack site and it no longer appeared in the above posting. This tells me that when you insert an image - the Forum does not download it - but links to the Image Shack website.

Some of the bits are falling into place.

Hello Alan, um, before you upload it, try to resize the picture so that it does not push my screen half way to Southend LOL ;)

I use IrvanView

800 by 600 is usually about right.

That is quite strange Nellie. I've been using Imageshack for years, and have never seen anything like that. Are you sure it came from imageshack?

Yes I'm sure, the screen shots were from my own computer taken after I clicked on an image shack thumbnail. And the browser I was using at the time was Firefox

I would like to bump my original post - because there are still some questions unanswered. I have highlighted them in red in the above quote.

I would particularly like to know which file extensions are admissable for uploading from my hard drive and how members include such document files as .pdf as attachments.

I've just checked and all file types are admissible at the moment. Size limit is 200k per post and members have a total attachment quota of 5mb, subscribers have 10mb

You can upload more than one image, but there is no way to manage images that you upload to the forum... that know of. It is much easier if you link to an offsite image

I could centre it by using the center tag that is available

And of course there is no size limit to the pictures because I'm not uploading them to the forum, although if you link to a massive picture then a mod is likely to come along and edit your post as it makes things look untidy. :P
