avexhype
I think this is a mechanical problem, well, I was putting in a DVD, and then my computer didnt recognize it....so I tried to eject it and it didnt open....so I got a paper clip and opened it...but now, it wont open, and some black rubber band came out of the drive... Scarecrow Man
That rubber band opens and closes your computer. They are very difficult to fix, and it would cost more from a technician than a new drive would.
avexhype
can I fix it myself? the drive is loose, I can slide the tray forward and backward...and what do you think caused this? I have been opening the dvd drive alot repeatedtly...
-pops-
If you do try to fix it yourself, disconnect and remove the drive from the computer before doing so.It isn't worth doing, though. A new drive would be very low cost and the chances of successfully replacing the drive belt are slim.
Scarecrow Man
I've had them snap before, but never just "fall out" Perhaps when you were using the paperclip, you poked a little too hard or not in the right spot.I'd recomend getting a new drive. You can attempt to repair it yourself, but you need tiny hands and sharp eyes.

avexhype
how long will it take the tech to put in the new drive? 10 minutes?
-pops-
Possibly not even that long.I replaced a DVD drive a few days ago. It took less than five minutes from taking the side off the computer case, installing the drive, replacing the case side and test running a disk. With some machines you don't even need to take the side off. The DVD etc drives are mounted on rails and slide in/out from the front.
avexhype
when the tech comes on the 27th, ill have the the computer case off, so it can be finished quicker...I dont know if my drive is mounted on a rail...
-pops-
Rail mounted drives usually have two spring clips either side. Pressing the clips and pulling allows the drive to slide out.
jason.b.c
It isn't worth doing, though. A new drive would be very low cost and the chances of successfully replacing the drive belt are slim.A new DVD drive around here cost's around 70-80 US dollars , 70-80 dollars = NOT "very low cost"...What is so hard about replacing the drive belt...?? So long as it isn't broken , How hard is it to pop it back in..? I don't see the difficulty...

Irene
I removed the old CD writer and put the new drive in its place. Is that a straightforward task? I thought I had an internal DVD writer, but unfortunately it's not. Do you think I could do it? The only things of that nature I have tackled is, increased ram and installed a card to facilitate downloads from my Handcam. :)pops gave a link which looks like a good deal. I'll use it if I feel confident about fitting it. :D
-pops-
Assuming you're talking desktop, replacing or installing an optical drive is very simple. However, if you don't feel confident or, you want to install a DVD writer to a laptop, the way to go is an external one.If you let us know which you prefer, we can easily sort you out with either the way to install an internal drive of a good deal with an external one. This seems quite good value for an external one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Freecom-DVD%C2%B1R...3152704-5442317
