gordythegouge Posted February 3, 2007 Report Share Posted February 3, 2007 Just received this large envelope through the door expounding the virtues of The Windows Advisor, a 600 hundred page plus tome, which will be the salvation of me as far as the PC is concerned!! 6 week free trial and then £15 if I keep it! Has anyone heard of them? (Agora Business Publications LLP) based in Skipton. I have to say the 8 page flyer has some excellent tips on it but........? Out of courtesy the people who sent it to you should have sent you a leaflet giving details which you could follow up. The sample issue contained downright incorrect and dangerous advice such as "It is quite safe to plug/unplug devices in the serial and parallel ports with the computer powered up." Well, NO it isn't. That is a good way of blowing (irreparable) fuses on the motherboard. There were more bits of ill advice and that was just on the sample issue.I wrote and complained to the publishers but there was no response. I have not heard or seen anything of the publication since, though.Anyway, why pay out money? You can come here and get all the advice you want for free and if we can't answer, more often than not we can direct you to a place that can. It's about the third one I've had, and it's the third one that has gone through the shredder and into the re-cycling bag. The trouble I have found with this type of publication is that it covers not only the OS you currently have but also the older ones such as Windows 98, 95, ME, 2000 and by the time you have received all this lot and bought the hard backed ring binders to put them into you find you could have bought a dedicated book on the OS you are running for a hell of a lot less. mark2 Posted February 3, 2007 Report Share Posted February 3, 2007 I've had the Windows Advisor envelope here too, and when it first arrived through the letter box I looked closely at it.I seem to recall in the small print something regarding updates costing £x , you had to return the updated pages (at your cost) or they would collect by direct debit, It could work out at £15 at month, a long time since I read their junk though.So I'm with rong and Gandalph on this, the help is quicker/friendlier and more accurate here.So for all that make this forum as it is. It was very comprehensive, but was all stuff that I have picked up over the years in any case. The CD that came with it contained access to various programs, some were only for trial periods only. The plan was that I was allowed to keep it for a trial period, and then accept it and provide direct debit details for updates at so much per page periodically, or return it. I returned it.
