catgate
I had occasion to take management to Goole this morning. We go relatively frequently mainly because that is where our nearest Lidl is, and it is only 30 minutes away. They do some very nice cooked meats (German,) and some very nice Schwaben Brau (German Pils) amongst other things.(Ich liebe Deutcher essen und trinken). We were in a shop, where management was looking at some knitwear, when the door opened and a very sophisticated (for Goole) voice said, "Cashmire?"An odd, overdressed woman was looking straight at the man behind the counter. He said, "Of course, come in."So when the woman got to the counter he said," And what can I do for you Madam?"She said "Cash me a cheque for £200."We were just going out of the door when the blood started to flow.Goole is a very odd place. It is not unusual to hear an English voice above the Polish. It may be quite nice when they finish it. Every time we go there seems to be another out break of road diggery in progress. We wondered if it was due to the expansion in the population, because I do not think I have ever seen as much blubber on the hoof in any other town I have ever been in.The town, and its ambience, isn't helped much by who ever's turn it is this month to run the railway. There is a level crossing, which overlays a cross roads next to the station right in the centre of town. The train service, usually a four coach diesel set carrying as many as six passengers which may have to stick out across the road when it is in the station, seems to be timed perfectly for maximun stoppage in all direction at least once every quarter of an hour. The frequent stoppage of all movement does give time to observe the natives as they are carelessly chomping their way through the apparently endless supply of fodder.Well worth a visit on the tour. Scarthy © ® ™
It's a great little town is Goole. Did you know the people of Goole affectionately call themselves "Goolies"? It's now home to a massive 'ebuyer' warehouse and a place my dad worked as a chief engineer on boats that dumped industrial waste at sea ! This waste was shipped from Leeds and surrounding areas, by canal, to Goole, where it was loaded onto boats (Readness was one) and then out to sea for dumping ! There were even fishermen who caught crabs from the area around the 'dumping ground' with their shells dissolved or missing from the chemicals ! ewwww ! ;)
