deuces wild
I must thank Panarchy for the link to the neowin site. I didn't know it existed and it seems to be a very tech savvie forum.I am thinking of building a computer myself and will find all the advice and information provided to panarchy - both here and on the other forum - very valuable. His thread there asking how to build a computer is very interesting......... It's HereI read it through and it looks like he asked for advice and took most of it. He was polite throughout the thread and is making progress on the build. Members at that forum were helpful.Way to go Panarchy!

Members at that forum were helpful.Way to go Panarchy!DW - I don't think anyone has accused panarchy of being impolite - and it is clear he making some progress on the build. By you stating that members on "that" forum were helpful carries the implication that members on this forum were not helpful. I hope that was not your intent because several people here offered their help and advice. It was when he kept ignoring sound advice without explanation that people became negative. The people on the neowin site were indeed helpful - but they were not subject to the same response. The people on the windows edge site very quickly closed down his thread with the statement from a mod :-Someone who needs to ask that last question should not be building their own PC. Let alone with the parts that you have purchased. I think it would be best of you to read up a bit on building PCs. There are TONS of books and manuals online on how to do this. I would highly recommend waiting to build this PC, or getting professional helpTopic Closed. The mods here at Windows Forum were more understanding and have let the thread remain open.DW - I applaud your last post and the advice you have given him - I sincerely hope he adopts it for his own good. rong
I think the problem is that some of the replies on this forum have not been helpful, and unnecessary. This Is a very useful topic on how to or maybe how not to build a computer, no offence was meant on the last statement Panarchy

The Zalman fan connects to the 'rear P182 fan' & the 'Zalman' port. Neither of the on board (on case) fans have connection that can go in the small white (4 'pins' on one row) 'socket'/'plug'.2. The 24 pin (2 rows) TruePower 550 that was also mentioned in the diagram (circled in red, as was 1.).3. I haven't been able to plug any of the on board (on case) fans (P182) into the motherboard.4. The harddrive (SATA), I have managed to 'find' one thing that connects to it (from the PSU) and one thing that connects to it from a 'plug' that I found in the ASUS (motherboard) box. There is still one more 'socket' on it, yet to be 'filled. It has 4 (1 row) 'pins' sticking up from it.Please help me out here (once again). Thanks in advance,Panarchy
rong
4. the four in a line pins are the power to the drive, I think you may already have the power set up though, a thin black strip from the PSU?I have an Asus motherboard and if you follow the book it shows you how to set up most things

andsome
You have had page upon page of advice in this and other topics, and are just NOT reading manuals and instruction leaflets. You are going at it like a bull in a china shop. Pops has already suggested that you sit back and think about things more carefully. I bet their must be over a hundred posts on this and other forums. I don't know about the others, but I certainly have not been LONG AWAITING photographs. Why don't you do as others have suggested , and READ THE INSTRUCTIONS? I for one am always interested in others building their computers, and enjoy seeing the advice given, (and taken), but this whole exercise has gone way way over the top, and become an absolute bore. You were advised by several people to tinker about with old components first, before spending your money on the new stuff, but totally ignored this and all other advice, given by people who DO know about these things, and were keen at first to help. Rant over, sorry.
-pops-
You should have some small clips to screw into the drives and they hold the drive in the rails (see the rectangular slot in the drive holders?) Sometimes hard drives are just left to rest in their rails without an physical fastening (not recommended as it shows laziness). It is vital that drives with outside access are held by clips. The spare cables don't necessarily go anywhere. The higher the power of the PSU, the more spare cables it will have as it is capable of powering more devices. Provided all your drives, graphic card (if necessary), motherboard and any other peripherals have a power connection then the spare plugs can be left alone. Note that ATX motherboards can have either 20 or 24 pin connectors. Ensure that if it is 24 pin that the auxiliary four pins (which usually clip on to the main 20 pin plug) are connected. Alan2273
Cannot tell from that rats nest.If you have the 24 pin main power connecter connected and I can see from the picture that you also have the auxillary 4 pin connecter hooked up as well and you have the DVD connections in correctly. But I cannot see any other connections on the motherboard for the tangle of wires. Those that are already connected , tie them up out of the way then clear the others up and post another picture. As you have four SATA ports that I can see, you will need to refer to the manual to see which one is which.

Alan2273
On studying the picture again, do you have an extraction fan on the top of your case, if not you will have to turn the fan around so it blows out the back of the case.Be careful with the airflow as the HSF will be turning slower than the rear extraction fan.Have you got the graphics card yet?.The last time I fitted a Zalman fan I had to replace the backplate on the motherboard, so you will have to take it all back out.
