catgate
The bigger connectors in your first picture are mainly power connectors for, as yet uninstalled, items such as HD Drivess, CD Drives, Floppy Drives, There are always some left floating about unused. As for the rest of them you need to consult the MB paperwork and, with the aid of a magnifying glass, study the legend printed on the MB. Alan2273
The four pin ones are molex connectors for older CD/DVD and IDE hard drives, the six pin with the retainer on the side is for the graphics card if it needs it.HSF is your Zalman heatsink & fan.You have connected the HSF to the wrong header

AlanHo
It would appear that you are struggling without a motherboard manual. Assuming that your MB is an ASUS P5K I would suggest you download a copy from the ASUS web site.Enter P5K and Manual in search boxes hereHaving done that - RTFM - give it a good read and find the pages dealing with the installation of the CPU and CPU cooling fan. I believe pages 10 and 34 are what you need.It will probably look like the following illustrations which quite clearly show where the various fans are connected. I am no expert though - so it may be prudent to get a second opinion from the neowin forum. Hope this helps.......

AlanHo
TIP : The ASUS website can be very slow. To download the manual might require as much patience as you will surely need to carefully and thoroughly read it.

andsome
As has been said on the backup forum. It's more than likely just down to plain common or garden laziness, plus stubbornness in refusing to take up much of the excellent advice given. If and when I ever need a new computer, I will more than likely have a go myself. I would obviously need some advice on one or two things, but will NOT start umpteen threads on several forums, asking the same questions on each, arguing against the advice given, and I will certainly READ ALL THE MANUALS, AND KEEP THEM OPEN AT THE APPROPRIATE PAGES WHILST WORKING. :D
AlanHo
Copied from the back-up forumI am toying with building a computer and have been following this thread here and the one on neowin forum with interest. Is it really that difficult ? - I keep asking myself. His last post on this forum asked for help with where to plug in his CPU cooling fan. I decided to go on the ASUS website and download the manual for his motherboard to see how clearly such information can be obtained.Within a couple of minutes I found the relevant information on pages 10 and 34 in the manual (which has 150 pages) complete with very clear diagrams. I posted an admittedly sarcastic reply to his thread attaching the relevant diagrams and suggesting that he should RTFM - and if he didn't have one - provided the ASUS download link. Having now perused the ASUS motherboard manual which is a mine of information presented very clearly - I am at a loss to understand why he has needed to ask so many questions. He is either, lazy, dyslexic, plain stupid or perhaps a bright young man who is just lacking in self confidence. I am prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume it is the latter.I have now seen enough to confirm that building a computer requires care and patience - but it aint exactly brain surgery. A friend is about to replace his desktop and has promised me his 2 year old computer so that I can get in a bit of practice dismantling, assembling and playing with BIOS settings etc before actually starting on the real thing.I will possibly need to post the odd question here when stuck for help - but I rather doubt that my thread will attract nearly 1000 views and 100 posts.I agree with rong that pictures posted here are very useful - not just to the originator - but to people like me anxious to learn more. AlanHo
Copied from the back-up forumURGENT ADVICEJust been reading a thread elsewhere about the merits of wearing either an earth wrist strap or surgical gloves to prevent static discharges when working on computer innards. Both method have their followers - but neither are totally reliable. The concensus seems to be the safest way is to be standing on a pure natural fibre carpet such as wool or cotton (not nylon or polyester) in a humidified room and to be totally naked except for wearing a wrist strap and surgical gloves on each hand. Socks (non nylon) are optional. Please post a photo
catgate
I have a friend who is dixlaskyc and he is very proficient at computerism. The thing that surprised me most was his ability to construct websites and such in various esoteric codes and languages. What has this got to do with Vertical Take Off computers? Don't ask me, I only came in because there was a light on, and it was dark outside.

Panarchy
Okay, well I think I've got everything plugged in now. (there were no cables for the white one, but I connected it to power through another port, and all the fan connectors (they look molex) are connected to eachother, and the very end of the 'chain' of them, is the (fan only) PSU connection. So I think that is all good, correct? Also, I still haven't been able to get the DVD Burner stable... some help here! Thanks in advance,Panarchy
Panarchy
^Plugs that are left, not from the PSU, from the case! What do I do?^My arrangement with the oncase fans, is that right? The last one, with Fan Only written on it, is from the PSU.^My current configuration (topview)Please help me out here. Thanks in advance,Panarchy

-pops-
The 9 +1 connectors (ten holes, one blanked out) are for front panel mounted USB/Firewire and possibly audio which match up with corresponding pin arrays on the motherboard. Do not under any circumstances change the blanking plugs and do not force the connectors into pin arrays that don't match up.How many case fans do you have? I can't see any reason why you have so many Molex plugs connected in series like that. Most machines are cooled adequately by the CPU fan and one or at most two case fans. Do not put fans in there without careful thought about airflow - it can happen that multiple fans are less efficient at removing the heated air than, say, a single large fan. rong
You will have to use the manual to find out where they go, mine are down the bottom of the MB check the wires to find out which way round they go. You do know that if you had practised first you could have done this in about an hour.
