Irene Posted May 5, 2008 Report Share Posted May 5, 2008 After the local private hospital, Capio Rowley Hall, recently began taking NHS patients on the Choose and Book system, I elected to take my eye cataract treatment there, because I believed that the waiting list would be shorter..... Correct!! However, the lens replacement was a tragedy. The person who took the measurement of my (left) eye made an error, causing the surgeon to insert a severely incorrect lens. As a result, the past four weeks have been the worst which I have endured in my lifetime. At the tender age of 9, it was established that I had severe myopia. Since then I have had prescribed spectacle correction.But.... since the error just four weeks ago, I have had virtually no way to correct this terrible error. :( It has been a tortuous route to arrive at the current situation, which is that the hospital have agreed that they will do a Lasek laser correction on the offended eye and I will pay for the other eye to be corrected by the same method. The Surgeon requested that I should go to my Optician for an up to date eye test. (Suggests to me that he doesn't trust his own support staff! :0 ). As a consequence, I will be having laser surgery late afternoon tomorrow. So, I look forward to 'seeing more clearly' afterwards. Sounds a bit like a song! :lol: Again, I am not certain when I will be firing on all cylinders, but I can assure you that I will be back in action as soon as the situation permits. Irene Posted May 6, 2008 Author Report Share Posted May 6, 2008 I just don't believe what has happened today!!!At 11:30 this morning the phone rang..... It was the Consultant. Having done his calculations last night, as to the probable outcome of each patients' surgery, he came to the conclusion that it would not be advisable for me to proceed with the laser correction tonight (6pm). :0 It would appear that my cornea is too deep for the laser to perform to a satisfactory result. Also, another of the figures used for the calculation is on the top limit. So, that coupled with the cornea problem, he thinks it would be advisable to wait to see if the 'high figure' reduces to a more acceptable level.I went to see him a short while ago to discuss the options. To be honest, I had already decided to suggest a stay of execution for say two months, in order to get my life back to some normality. I now have an appointment on July 1st, to have tests and calculations re-done, after which I will make a decision on how, or even if, to go further.In the meantime, I intend to order a suitable lens in the new prescription for my most recent specs and go back to the old faithfulls. I simply cannot believe that this terrible thing has happened to me. :( I am certainly going to wait for the period of a couple of months to get my act together again. It sounds to me as though someone should be asking some very searching questions, particularly about the eyesight and ability of certain "experts".I hate to use the expression here but it does look like "the blind leading the blind".It seems to me that they are all 'Specialised'. The only way that anyone will proceed is if, 'one' will sign to say that they accept the consequences!!In other words, don't blame me if it all goes wrong!The fact that someone, like me, is sitting here with a completely unacceptable situation, with no one who is prepared to say that, "in view of all of the problems and situation, as it stands, this is what you are advised to do". Is there no one out there who can take a view on the overall situation??Surely I can't be the only victim of this, in Watchful's words, "debacle"?All that I can say, is that if anyone out there has experienced the same or a similar problem, I would be very interested to hear about it. They had me sign it just before I was taken down to theatre, but probably foolishly I didn't read the detail. However, bearing in mind that I couldn't clearly see through my left eye (drops administered to dilate the pupil) and I was feeling thoroughly terrified, perhaps it's not so surprising. The measurements in question were taken by the nursing staff, and I certainly recall that they had difficulty obtaining the reading. Ask for a copy of the form - most places provide you with a copy as a matter of course and it seems odd that you don't have it. Ask for a copy of all the records they have on you - it is your right in law.My elder son, who is a consultant gynaecologist, finds it very strange that you are not being better looked after.
