Alan2273 Posted August 22, 2008 Report Share Posted August 22, 2008 I have just had an e-mail from E-Bay showing the increased fees for selling from the 28th September.They are going up quite substantially.There were a lot of complaints about the feedback changes, however these increases will do a lot more harm than the feedback issue did.This site is just getting plain greedy. I may still buy the odd thing but with the price increases to sellers and the fact that you have to offer Paypal as a payment option rules me out. You can't choose who your buyer is going to be and if they decide to use Paypal then you're stuck with having to register with it. No thanks.Ebay is, in fact, trying to force everyone to use Paypal. I have used it many times over the past few years and find it very convenient both when buying and selling. Money transfer is quick and secure allowing fast despatch of goods.Neither am I all that concerned about eBay increasing their fees - if you look at the table linked to by Chris - it is not a massive increase for most circumstances. You can link your PayPal account to either a current acount or a credit card. Cheques can take ages to arrive, then you have to wait for them to fully clear through the bank (the sensible thing to do). It also involves a visit to the bank to deposit the cheque.PayPal is instant, and both the Seller and the Buyer are protected.All you need to do, is to incorporate any overheads (fees - eBay or PayPal) into your selling price.Personally, I enjoy creating a listing and being happy with the result, which attracts a sale.For me, the biggest recent downside has been the removal of the post offices into WH Smith. There is no convenient parking anywhere near to our WHS in town. Consequently, if you have multiple packages to send, it can be a real problem. I have virtually given up eBay since this happened. The freedom of choice I'm referring to is the seller having to put Paypal in their method of payment options; it's nothing to do with links to accounts. Many traders used to state that they did not use Paypal but they won't be able to do that now so I suspect they will cease to use ebay too.I've never had any trouble with cheques and pay them in at my local P.O. (I don't need parking there as it's just round the corner). It may close and then that would be another reason for not using ebay. Personally, I always enjoyed listing my things and taking the photos so I will miss that part of it. However, it's done to make a sale, not just as a hobby. Unfortunately, the Post Offices I have always patronised, in order to keep them open, will soon all be gone and Royal Mail privatised. We used to have the best mail system in the world. What I mean by that is that with PayPal you are restricted to paying for goods from either your PayPal credit balance or from a single nominated bank account. Trying to change that nominated account is a huge bother and takes days to complete. With Google, you can swap around your paying-out account at will, provided they are registered. If the account is not registered, it is the work of a few moments to do that.Other objections to PayPal are that 1) they are able to extract money from accounts in zero time but paying money into accounts is worse than paying by bank cheque and can take seven days for the transfer to complete (what is that money doing in the meantime?). 2) The fees charged in all transactions are significant and can be a notable proportion of the costs involved in a low value item. Our freedoms are already being eroded in too many areas already. I know, from personal experience, how long ebay take to settle disputes and it can be very time-consuming if you want to stick at it. Irene Posted August 24, 2008 Report Share Posted August 24, 2008 It's all a matter of personal choice.If anyone is unhappy for whatever the reason, as -pops- has suggested earlier, there are always alternatives.I have personally had good experiences with eBay. Most of my selling has been as a result of de-cluttering. It's amazing how much you can realise, just by clearing out lofts, garages, cupboards and drawers.
