Dreaded Yahoo Tool bear

There was a notification on my desktop when I started up this morning, telling me that McAffee site advisor had been updated. I had to click to accept, and found that there was also a tick in the dreaded Yahoo tool bar box. I unticked this, and in the next window had to decline. You are warned.

These unwanted toolbars are now more widespead than any virus. A few days ago I deleted 4 of them from a friend's computer. One of them I hadn't seen before - it was from AVG. She had no idea how they all got there and had been working with only about 2/3 of her screen usable for months. I'm sure many computer users who aren't very computer-savvy are in the same position.

It's a relative of the "Ubiquitous Google toolbar" and the "Infernal Ask Toolbar". All had there place several generations of browser ago, all now a waste of time and space.

Actually I do, explicitly and intentionally, install the Google toolbar on all browsers I use. It is very useful to me, and I can tailor it to show exactly what I need.

I would be lost without the Google toolbar. It's my first port of call for any search.

I've got a little box at the top of the screen with three others in it. I realise they are in the system but I am happy to just ignore them.

I suppose they are only a nuisance if you don't know how to make them vanish.

How did you get that, artist? And could you post a screenshot, please? I have Google as my home page & use other search engines which I access from the Links toolbar. Is that what you're referring to?

SeaMonkey has no need for toolbars, you type what you want to search in the address bar, click Search where Go is on most other browsers and it searches that text in Google. Quite handy. :)

All search engines do this, don't they? The usefullness of a toolbar is for shortcuts to your regular sites, saving copies of pages, and things like that - you don't even have to type anything.

Commercial toolbars emphasise shortcuts to their own sites, advertise their own products & take up unnecessary memory and screen space.

No, no, no. :P

Look at the image I'll post of my Google search.

Might be a bit hard to read though. :P

It's an Address Bar/Google Search Toolbar. That's what I meant.

Since I'm slightly promoting the use of SeaMonkey - It comes with a built-in ChatZilla client which mimics that of mIRC, Address Book, Composer (HTML Source, I think), Mail (kind of like Thunderbird - or more or less the same, Navigator (which I don't know what that does...), and it uses less memory than any other browser I've tried. ;)

I love it. :D Much, much better than IE.

... Navigator (which I don't know what that does...)

You probably mean Netscape Navigator, one of the first browsers in the universe. We actually had to buy it at the time (long before MS came out with their free browser, IE). I still have the floppy disk somewhere with Netscape Navigator 1.1... B)
