Hb_Kai
I found this on a Wikipedia articleIn October 2001, Microsoft released Windows XP, a version built on the Windows NT kernel that also retained the consumer-oriented usability of Windows 95 and its successors. This new version was widely praised in computer magazines.[15] It shipped in two distinct editions, "Home" and "Professional", the former lacking many of the superior security and networking features of the Professional edition. Additionally, the first "Media Center" edition was released in 2002,[16] with an emphasis on support for DVD and TV functionality including program recording and a remote control. Mainstream support for Windows XP will continue until April 14, 2009 and extended support will continue until April 8, 2014.[17]What does extended support mean?I'd like to be using XP for longer than another 6 years. :(
Belatucadrus
I'm not bothered, I've still got a W98 pc that's working fine and as long as I can get anti virus, a firewall and run Firefox or some alternative to obsolete IE variants I'll continue doing so. I've always regarded the horrendous danger of running an unsupported operating system as a rather irritating marketing ploy. XP works and as long as the hardware holds together in this house will continue to do so.I'm also starting to fiddle around with Ubuntu as it looks to do pretty much everything I need at no cost. rong
Something about pinning your shirt from back to front, thus holding up in anything between. Of course it only works with the old shirts with long tails
Hb_Kai
What's that got to do with MS though? :( You're confusing me so much, I'm never coming back to this post.
Dencandy
What does extended support mean?I'd like to be using XP for longer than another 6 years. :(According to THIS from Windows Secrets extended support means that support is provided but you have to pay for it (I don't know the current rates). Until 14 April 2009 support is described as Mainstream which means its free. I don't know the exact details but I'm sure if you go to Microsoft Help & Support and type something like "XP extended support" you'll get a lot more details.Given the vast number of XP users in the world now it seems MS will be under enormous pressure to continue extended support beyond the usual 5 years, i.e. beyond even April 2014. Partly it depends upon how good a product Windows 7 is. If it's stable, fast, flexible etc people will want to upgrade to it. But if it bombs, people will want to stay with XP. But anything can happen really... :)
-pops-
The whole idea of these statements is to promote panic in the unwary - the philosophy being that without support, the operating system will no longer work. This is simply not true. I know people who still use Windows 95 as their main computer system. Support for that ended many years ago - similarly with W98.I've never asked Microsoft for support for any of their products (even as far back as Windows 3.1) and I doubt that I ever will. OK, I've consulted their website for advice but this is completely different to making a positive approach to the company for help. More often than not, I can get the best advice from forums like this one and, in turn, I try and offer any help I can to people in need. No, it won't make any difference to me at all - nor to most computer users. It certainly won't induce me to abandon my current operating system purely to line the ever deepening pockets of the Microsoft company in their marketing of ever increasingly bloated and pointless "improved" Windows versions.
