Microsoft will offer significant discounts on a limited number of Windows 7 licences pre-ordered in a limited period over the summer.

From the 15 July to the 9 August, UK retailers such as Micro Anvika are running the introductory offer on pre-orders of Windows 7. PC users can buy a Windows 7 Home Premium licence for £49 - a saving of £100. Alternatively Windows 7 Pro will retail for just £99: £120 less than Microsoft's suggested retail price (SRP).

Customers are allowed to buy only up to three licences, and stocks are limited.

If you intend moving up to Windows 7 - this is an offer that appears to be well worth taking up.

This thread is will not be of interest to those forum members who will wish to wait for a year or two before either upgrading to Windows 7 or buying a new computer with Windows 7 pre-loaded. The wait will cost you an extra £100 by not taking up this offer .......

Note that this offer is for the "E" versions of Windows 7 - without a self-contained browser.

Shouldn't be a problem but it is something to be aware of.

I understand that the E version has been imposed on Microsoft by the Eurocrats and is a special version for Europe without IE8. You can download IE8 - or another browser of your choice - and install separately.

(I have registered to order two copies of Windows 7 Home Premium and will upgrade both our computers ASAP. I have also downloaded IE8 onto a CD in readiness).

Yes it is a good offer as it is the full retail version, but you cannot do an upgrade from it as it has to be a clean install.

The reason you cannot upgrade Vista to Windows 7E - is because IE8 is installed with Vista and the upgrade would need to uninstall it to satisfy the Eurocrats. Hence the need for a clean install - which I would have done in any case. I am not a fan of OS upgrades - always prefer a nice shiny new clean machine.

How are you supposed to download a new browser for a new Windows installation without Internet Explorer?

Is this another of their ways of being annoying?

You just have to download a browser prior to installation. Blame the Eurocrats, not MS this time.

I thought you were over the moon with VISTA, why waste money? B)

OK, I am a sheep, but I will NOT be following for several years yet. Certainly not until this computer is on its last legs. I see NO point in throwing away a perfectly good operating syatem on a whim to have the latest, which could well be a pig in a poke. Each to his/her own. :D

I doubt you will have to necessarily follow anyway. I reckon XP still has a long life ahead of it, even with its support ending in a few years.

There may even be online community projects attempting to keep XP alive after Microsoft abandoning it.

What's with that though? I don't quite get it... They give the OS without its browser. Why not just exclude the firewall or something that's less likely to be used?

Windows 95 was delivered without a browser. I had to order Netscape to access the Internet; it was delivered on a floppy disk, and I think it cost about USD 19.00 at that time.

I never knew they released OS' without browsers. I always thought Microsoft always had IE installed on its OS installation.

I would think at the time of 95 not many people had internet access and Microsoft probably hadn't stolen a browser yet

I would have agreed with you whole heartedly. I am one of XP's biggest fanboys. I never touched vista. But now I have used Win 7 since version 7000. If you haven't tried it you have no idea what you are misiing. Win 7 is simply amazing. Cannot wait for my full n' final version.

As you say "Each to his/her own".

Umm, I heard they were doing a family pack of three - that's three licences - not something for the weekend ;)

Haven't seen the details yet though...

Can you please elaborate and tell us what is so amazing, that it is worth throwing away an excellent operating system for, and spending money to replace it? Can it be as pops described in an earlier topic, just pretty pretty window dressing? Is it twice as fast as Windows XP? Does it make fresh tea when requested, etc etc? :D

I decided to download and install Windows 7 Ultimate (32 bit) today as a dual boot with Vista Ultimate.

I am mighty impressed.

The pleasure begins when you gently push the computer start button - and the machine purrs into life presenting you with a boot screen asking you to chose Vista or Windows 7. I got so excited it was not easy to hold my hand still enough to hit the right key - the sense of breathless anticipation was so great.

The monitor screen starts off a deep sensual black - when suddemly 4 little glowing coloured orbs appear at the centre of the screen and do a wonderful little gyrating dance before morphing jointly into an incandescent Quad chequer Windows flag which shimmers in its 4 beatiful colours. This fades back to a black screen for a few seconds before the intitial background screen drifts across the page - a superb electric blue/green with feint lines drifting across and a most captivating sprig of greenery in the bottom right corner to hold your spellbound attention. Several seconds later this screen is replaced by the desktop displaying a superbly crafted picture of your choice from a large library. The default is an underwater static scene depicting the water in a medley of luminescent light blue shades with a most enticing fish - possibly a cod - lazily swimming-by whilst blowing bubbles which are drifting towards the top of the screen. It is hard to believe that so much pleasure can be crammed into the 70 seconds it takes my computer to boot from scratch. You are steeped in so much enjoyment that it is difficult not to switch the computer off and reboot it right there and then so that you can bask in the pleasure one more time.

Once you are up and running you find that programmes seem to load more quickly than before - not by much - but enough to notice the difference. Vista users like myself will be famiiar with most of the features - but the interface and controls are much more intuitive and user friendly. My Vista folder contains 26,968 files and occupies 7.55 GB - Windows 7 is smaller with 18,687 files occupying 4.55 GB. The new OS has clearly been put on a diet - but some of the difference will be due to the fact that Windows 7 has been stripped of Windows Mail, Windows Movie Maker and Windows Photo Gallery which are all included with Vista.

All my current software has loaded without problems - as has my OKI Colour Laser Printer and my Epson Printer/Scanner. I was expecting problems with the USB software links to my Sat-Nav and phones - but they are working fine. I had a slight hiccup getting my wireless network to function smoothly with my wife's computer and my laptop - but at the end if the day it was down to me not reading the instructions properly and thus missing a required setting.

I have been unable to find a setting for it to make fresh tea - but I had no idea that XP had this feature.

It is early days yet - I have spent most of the day installing software which required lots of reboots (which were such a joy) - but from the couple of hours spent using it this evening, I have not seen any reason to revert to Vista and look forward to investing my money on the retail version in October.

Roll on tomorrow so I can reboot it again and get 70 seconds of pure heaven...................
