catgate
But why doesn't the fox get out from under the basket and eat the goose?
MANEMAN
But why doesn't the fox get out from under the basket and eat the goose? The fox doesn't get out from under the basket because he has been watching a steel box go up and down the road that many times, that he now suffers from vertigo. This was part of the plan by Jack and Jill, and the very reason for sending secret messages in the first place. With the fox quite giddy, the goose now fearing no predatory advances is suprised when a steel box is dropped upon him. Jack and Jill went up the hillTheir morals were not loose. No naughty plans had Jack for Jill. Just sit upon a mountain top to feast upon a goose. catgate
The true story of Jack and Jill is as follows, and is an old piece of Yorkshire folk lore stretching way back into the '90s.There were many old cures practised in Yorkshire over the years. The nursery rhyme "Jack and Jill" was based on an event which actually occurred in Ingleton. Jack Oldroyde had gone, with his friend Roger Spewdly's sister Jill, up a particular hill, to fetch a pail of water. The hill in question was Tumble hill, so called because people were constantly falling down it. The source of the water was not, as is popularly believed, a well, but was actually a tap in the kitchen of a Mrs. Pruett. She was the only person in the area who had paid her water bill, and therefore had not been "cut off" (as they called it locally). There was a rumour that her financial interest in a local withie company was paying handsomely. At some point, and it is not clear if it was before or after the water was in the bucket, Jack did what everybody seemed to do up that hill, and fell over. He was copied exactly by Roger Spewdly's sister. Bishop Crabtangler does not seem to have determined whether or not she suffered any harm, but he insists that Jack broke his crown.Traditionally this has been interpreted as the crown of his head, but controversial evidence leads us to the conclusion that it was a crown on one of his front teeth that got broken in the fall. This is further supported by the "vinegar and brown paper", which was applied as a routine measure, when someone broke a crown off a tooth. It has never been discovered why this was done, and the good Bishop sheds no light on the matter either, because it is now known, as it was then, that vinegar and brown paper on a tooth does absolutely no good at all.
