Vacuum Cleaners

Our old Vax 4000 suddenly expired this morning. It suffered an aneurysm of the windings and a prolapse of the commutator.

I have had it to bits a few times over the last ten years for one thing and another, but, it has now become a used-to-be vacuum cleaner.

So I am looking for opinions on these new modern bagless models. The suggestion seems to be that Dysons are over hyped and over priced, and other makers now have caught up, in all but price.

What does the committee think?

Definitely a Dyson. We have had ours for twelve years now and it still picks up the dirt and dog hair no problem. The only new part I have ever put on is new brush, not bad for twelve years of use. Shop around, try Amazon. Pricey they may be, but they certainly do the job and last very well.

I think your problem is trying to use a family PC to do the cleaning, you would be better off with a Henry, we've (my wife)had ours for 20 odd years and still working well

Check out TJHughes, they tend to be end of range items, but the prices are usually well worth a look if you're not intent on keeping up with cutting edge vacuuming technology.

We have a Pansonic Upright downstairs and an Electrolux upright upstairs - both more than 10 years old and both have been totally reliable. I keep a Vax wet and dry in the garage as a back up when someone spills wine on the carpet etc. or I have lots of DIY debris to clean up.

I have no personal experience of Dyson - but 1 friend swears by them and two friends tell a dismal tale of poor reliability and high repair costs. It's probably the luck of the draw.

Anyway - at your age - you and your dear wife would both benefit from more aerobic exercise. Buy a nice stiff bristle brush and pan set which will promote your health, save you money, lower your carbon footprint and be totally reliable.

I've had 2 Dysons over the years and both have stopped working after a few years.

I won't be buying one again.

I've now settled for a Vax Power 5 cyclonic cleaner (which is similar to a Dyson).

So far it's lasted so fingers crossed that it doesn't end up like the Dyson's

We had a Dyson from there at a fraction of the price asked by other shops. We have been well pleased with it.

Well we finally got a bagless wonder. Thanks for you advice.

We looked around and saw all sorts of things.

The Dysons looked overpriced and seemed a bit heavy, as did various others. We eventually bought a fairly light Samsung that had a decent sized motor.

So far she who matters is very pleased with it and it is much more obedient than the Vax was.

It seems to do most of what she tells it to do. Also, because it has a handle, it tends to be guided more than the Vax used to be. That had to follow where it was dragged by the pipe.
