There exists a little known disease called denial syndrome where the individual has a compulsive urge to deny things - even things he hasn't done.

Treatment is available but has to be administerd with extreme care in case it tips the patient into the equally distressing "Admission Syndrome" where the patient admits everything - even things he hasn't done.

Doug's sounds like a classic case.
