Mr Davo 69 Posted February 24, 2011 Report Share Posted February 24, 2011 Hi All,I have just installed the Windows 7 Service Pack 1 for x64 based systems.Let me start by saying that the installation took over an hour, so if you intend on installing SP 1 be prepared to sit around for a while, or start the process and then go and watch a movie!Over all I am not at all impressed by the installation, and I am now seeing a watermark at the bottom right hand corner of my screen that says:Test ModeWindows 7Build 7601I figure that it is too early to work out why this has popped up. Alan2273 Posted February 24, 2011 Report Share Posted February 24, 2011 If you have a watermark, you have downloaded the RC1 version instead of the RC version, (which was the test beta version),I suggest you uninstall that one and reinstall SP1 through Microsoft update. AlanHo Posted February 24, 2011 Report Share Posted February 24, 2011 I just installed SP1 64 bit using Windows Update - it has gone smoothly.Because the above posters mentioned the time take - I timed my update.It took 28 minutes from initiating the download to when it asked for a compulsory restart. I continued to use the computer normally while this was going on.It then took a further 8 minutes to restart the computer, configure windows and then load the desktop. Does it need to be manually installed?It did not install automatically on either my computer nor my wife's. In both cases when I opened the Windows Update window (from the programmes menu) it showed that there was an important update awaiting installation. The computers had both automatically checked for updates earlier but had not yet installed them.This has happened before with some updates - but most are installed automatically. I wonder if the system holds off automatically installing just those updates that will require a restart - as SP1 does. One of my friends upgraded to Windows 7 yesterday and installed SP1 straight away. He reckons it took about 90 minutes to execute just the update after windows was installed. I can only conclude from this that if your computer is well up to date - SP1 has less to install.My install went fine and I have not experienced any problems. However - all my software is bog standard boring stuff and I don't have any games or fancy music or video players installed. I am sure some people will experience some incompatibilities - especially those with obscure software that Misrosoft are yet to allow for. Another one who has been caught out by Microsoft's little misdemeanours in the past. :) It is safe, - but make a disk image first, have emergency services on speed-dial, keep fire extinguishers, and fire blankets close by, and make sure there is a first-aider in the building.Now, - You're good to go. bludgard Posted February 25, 2011 Report Share Posted February 25, 2011 Same here.Installed on Win 7 lappy yesterday afternoon.Took about an hour and a half because of the internet speed.Then another 20 minutes after restart for .NET to run CPU at full throttle.So far I haven't noticed any issues.If I remember correctly,it was some 70 something MB in size for a totally updated system.I am diggin' around in Event Viewer now to check damages incurred.Will let you know if I find anything outstanding.
