Team GB did not exist according to the EU

I have not posted on here for a long time, as the excessive censorship was not conducive to a good debate. I therefore hope that this thread will not be locked.

I for one am very proud of the feats of our athletes in the Olympics. Now it seems that the commissars of the EU are trying to deny that Team GB even existed. In fact none of the countries of Europe entered a team according to them, they were all Team Europe. I have sent this link to David Cameron, and my constituency MP and also My Euro MP, in the hope that they will inform these would be dictators that GB still exists as a separate country, and that we are proud of that fact, and proud of our athletes I hope that others on here will do the same.

This is Eurocracy at its most lunatic.

The EU medal tracker is generated for all Olympics fans by the agency Euro-Informationen in Berlin. Euro-Informationen is a content provider in the area of consumer-oriented communications.

While I accept there may be some interest if you compare the total medals earned by each continent (shown at the bottom of the table) the reason for anyone to do a totally artificial "European Union" team calculation is beyond belief.

All of this sport is just sublimated war where nobody gets killed - or are not supposed to unless you are some poor hapless pedestrian getting mown down by one of the organizers buses.

Why not just say the World won the Olympics and have done with all of this nationalistic nonsense.

(This is not necessarily my real view of the situation).

To be fair to the site it does offer a qualification

How many medals could the EU win if it took part in the Olympic Games as one team?

It's also appears to be an independent website run by : Euro-Informationen, Berlin, Germany. The communication company is a content provider in the area of consumer-oriented communications.

So if the EU does try to unilaterally co-opt the achievements of any nations athletes without their consent I'll get as pissed off as anybody. I'm not however going to blow a fuse over what appears to be an academic exercise by a bunch of consultants with way way too much time on their hands.

It looks as if Marina Yannakoudakis has sounded off somewhat prematurely, still she's an MEP not a bunch renowned for their common sense. There's quite enough to detest about the EU without getting your undies in a twist like that.

Why not e mail the PM and your MP the same as i have. At least it helps if they know how you feel.

To be quite honest, I have emailed our local MP and others over other issues, but they just 'sit on the fence' in my experience. :rtfm:

Likewise as with the petition e-website the response is usually thanks for your interest now bugger of as we politicians know better than you. Which when you consider the lack of real world experience in these career parasites is pretty damned unlikely.

The whole "Olympic" nonsense is nothing but jingoistic, racism used to benefit the pockets of its supporters and sponsers, and a few people "on the knock" for the Honours List.

Every year there are "The Worlds", which seem to provide an opportunity for individuals to prove who is best, and which, I would have thought, were enough to satisfy anyone, without trying to transfer large quantities of public money into private pockets under the guise of fillial endevour.

If it is not Racist why does every nation that runs the silly event try to out do / out shine the previous one? Furthermore why is there this big fight as to who will be the next idiot nation to bankrupt itself just for its own vanity (or more correctly that of its politicians)?

Racist ? No I don't see it, in fact in many ways it's one of the least racist events ever, with the dishonorable exception of one Swiss footballer. Nationalistic definately but in most cases not I feel Jingoistic, taking the Cambridge definition "someone who believes that their own country is always best" while there are countries showing signs of it I feel that UK sports fans were open minded and realistic enough to appreciate sport on its own merits. Apart from one buffoon who threw a bottle at Usain Bolt I felt we aquited ourselves rather well.

Now if you want an example of narrow minded parochial, racist, jingoistic nastiness look no further than the Premiership the footies back and it's as morraly unenlightening as ever.

I remember well that several Labour councils some years ago condemned competition in sport as being bad because it gave losers an inferiority complex. What a load of rubbish. Were it not for a competitive spirit we would all still be living in caves. Competitive sport is a good way of keeping young people out of trouble, and keeping them fit. Much better than hanging round in gangs causing trouble. I was never much good at sport as a kid, but was always ready to cheer my school team on against others. Crown green bowls is one thing that I have been able to become MODERATELY good at, and we all enjoy our three competitive games each week in the summer, with drinks and refreshments afterwards. I suppose we would be accused by some as getting involved in pseudo wars.
