Windows 8

I tried the Preview version out for a couple of week's, and I have to say that I did not like it one little bit.

Compared to the Macintosh Mountain Lion OS X, Windows is rubbish IMHO. There is no way I would fork out good money on Windows 8. It may be a different kettle of fish if anyone has a touch-screen device which is what Windows 8 was designed for but with just an ordinary monitor I'm afraid they can stick it. B)

I have not tried W8, nor seen it anywhere. Yet I have a feeling that it will be a flop like ME and Vista. No wonder Microsoft is giving it away for practically no money.

My feelings exactly Pat. As stated above, I gave the Preview version a try out for three weeks and did not like it one little bit.

Well, I paid my £49-99 and received my W8 Pro upgrade. I also received a £3+ rebate as they reduced the price even before launch (not a good sign).

What is it? It's Windows 7 that has been wrapped up in layers of pointless graphics and somewhere on the way, its Start Button has dropped off - not a good move.

Silly as the Windows Start Button has been thought in the past, it's a damned sight more logical and easier than the scheme that is used now - for starting, stopping and all the other things it allowed you to do.

Another one of Microsoft's less successful efforts - as Pat says:

I have a feeling that it will be a flop like ME and Vista. No wonder Microsoft is giving it away for practically no money.

I'm reformatting and installing an unused Window 7 Pro.

(Note, there is no period of grace to activate. That is done during the install - which, by the way, is far from straightforward and took me several attempts to get it going.

Pops I am surprised you payed that much as my upgrade only cost £14.99, but it was an on-line upgrade.

I decided at that price, it was cheap enough to replace Vista which is on my laptop.

The actual OS is really only for touch screen enabled devices, as using a mouse is a pain, every time you go to click the box in the top right corner to close a program the system bar comes up.

As far as the OS itself, it is a lot faster than Vista at loading and response times.

After several hours fiddling with Win 8 I stopped and deleted all the apps I did not need and resized them and put them into blocks with a category name under them.

The biggest pain in having no start button is when you shut down the computer, you have to move the mouse to the left corner then on the bar you have to click system then select power, then shut down .

For touch enabled devices it will be a good OS, but as far as the desktop is concerned, in my opinion they have dropped a clanger.

There are several programs that add an extra layer. so you can get the start button back, but surely Microsoft should have given this option.Untitled.jpg

As referred to above ................... Try this for a Shutdown icon or tile on the Desktop, and Start menu.

On the desktop right-click and select New > Shortcut.

In the Type location box enter the following (without the quotes) ‘shutdown /s /t 0’

Watch out for the spaces, and the last character is a zero.

Click Next

Give it a name, Shutdown being the obvious one, and click Finish.

Leave it as a basic shortcut icon, or right-click on it and select Change Icon, for something more visually interesting.

When you are finished right click on it and select Pin to Start.

Drag it to a prominent position and it’s job done!
