Heads of US destroyers charged over collisions

Quote

Earlier, the Navy said in an investigative report that poor judgment by the commanding officers and insufficient capabilities of the crew were to blame for the collisions.

"insufficient capabilities of the crew" in other words, "They had not sufficient ship training to avoid piloting their multi billion dollar warships into enormous slow moving commercial shipping". Were they not looking where they were going, was the radar turned off did nobody know how to change course ? You have to wonder if somebody was playing some ginormous ill conceived game of chicken or were they just so arrogant they assumed that as they were the mighty US Navy everybody would get out of their way. Forgetting the fact that neither Container ships nor Oil tankers are the most manoeuvrable objects on the high seas.

The fact that it happened once is pretty mind blowing, but twice !

Rule of the Sea. Smaller Vessels are supposed to give way to larger vessels. The Larger Vessel being less manoeuvrable. All Vessels are supposed to give way to a Man of War. I can see this turning into some sort of farce over the next few Month's.

ACTUAL transcript of a US naval ship with Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. This radio conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on 10-10-95.

Americans: “Please divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.”

Canadians: “Recommend you divert YOUR course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.”

Americans: “This is the captain of a US Navy ship. I say again, divert YOUR course.”

Canadians: “No, I say again, you divert YOUR course.”

Americans: “THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN, THE SECOND LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES’ ATLANTIC FLEET. WE ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THREE DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS SUPPORT VESSELS. I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15 DEGREES NORTH. THAT’S ONE-FIVE DEGREES NORTH, OR COUNTER MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.”

Canadians: “This is a lighthouse. Your call.”

This is, apparently, a fabrication but could so easily be true considering the general attitude of the US -especially these days.
