Boris Posted February 11, 2004 Report Share Posted February 11, 2004 If you plan to install XP and Linux on separate H/Ds then read this :-To get WindowsXP and Linux (any version) to coexist in peace, goodwill and harmony: 1) Install Windows XP on a hard disc on the primary channel 2) Set the disc WinXP is installed on to be the primary SLAVE 3) Install Linux on the newly installed primary master. Remember to set aside a few GB on the disc to be a FAT32 partition Windows can detect - this makes sharing files between the OSs easier, since NTFS writing isn't up to it yet. 4) Use LILO. You can actually make WinXP think it's still on the primary master by using the following for your Windows section of /etc/lilo.conf: Code: other=/dev/hdb1 label="windows" table=/dev/hdb map-drive=0x80 Â Â Â to=0x81 map-drive=0x81 Â Â Â to=0x80 Mandrake uses this by default. Explanation: WindowsXP writes far more information to the bootblock than Win9x. In particular it has 64 bytes of vital data exactly where LILO would normally sit. IF you try to install LILO to a WinXP-written boot block, you will screw both OSs. Grub is excellent but very hard to configure. It has real problems booting from NTFS discs without some very careful setting up, that no distro has managed to pre-package yet. Just don't bother. You cannot install WinXP directly to a slave drive with a master drive present. It wants to load 30MB to the primary master for its own bloat-loader. By making WinXP the slave drive after having installed it, you fool it into thinking it's the only OS present. It likes that. This also has the advantage that should you screw up linux, you can set to boot from the slave drive in BIOS, and Windows will load with no further effort. Linux installers are quite smart enough to realise when windows is present, but not to realise that it's a little sensitive.If you don't understand this - don't even think about starting to set up a dual-boot this way :D Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Andy-2004 Posted February 12, 2004 Report Share Posted February 12, 2004 can any one give me a direct link to get knoppixi cant find it at all on that site or indeed any otherwait it think ive got it...im downloading it nowas far as i can tell by the little prewiew it isnt recognised by windows...is this normalfrom here i asume all i have to do is set my bios to "boot from cd" then reboot....would this be correct? mark2 Posted February 12, 2004 Report Share Posted February 12, 2004 Correct Andy, burn as an ISO image, if you connect via ethernet card you can surf with it too.I regularly run Knoppix and have mandrake 8.2 on a dual boot, will be 9.2 when i get round to it. moon Posted February 12, 2004 Report Share Posted February 12, 2004 I opted for the 'send me the Knoppix CD' option ( £2.00) I haven't used it yet but I can see from posts at the Pit that it's just a taster in Linux terms. I'll have to vote in part on the opinions expressed by experienced Linux users elsewhere. For stability and security- Linux all the way.
