Andy-2004 Posted April 27, 2004 Report Share Posted April 27, 2004 Well as some people may well know the fact that we have soo many of our members not "active" really quite annoyes me...So im asking you if anything should be done about it...?My reasonsThe reasons that cause me to be annoyed by the amount of members that have signed up and barely posted at all....some not at all as the first few pages of search results show (results displayed in 50's)I feel that it dosent give a true representatuion of how many truely active members we have this place and i would think that to any new members looking to jon up then it would seen a little daunting that there are 750+ members....(I think this beacuse i dont really like the Pit cause there are soo many members and soo many posts per day that you cant keep up with it)Another fairly obvous reason for members to sign up is the get thier HJT logs checked....ok 99.99999999% of the time goes to plan and they get thier log checked and they go off happly into the sunset never to be seen again...yet thier profile remains.....To slove this problem i propose the idea of enabling the HJT board to accept guests to be able to post...with out having to regester to the Forums...that way it will cut down on the amount of random members who disappear and never come back....Now that I have proposed an idea for the future of The WF members problem (in my opinion) i want to propose one to aid the problem of the past...(members who have regestered and buggered off)Now before you all start on me with the "some people just like to come to WF and read the topics and never post...signing up is thier way of saying that they want to be part of it all wether thay post or not"I have thought of a way around this problem as well....Is there a way to track useres by how often they come online rather than how often they post? trackrat Posted April 27, 2004 Report Share Posted April 27, 2004 I voted no because not everyone logs in regulary, that does not mean that on the odd occasions that they do log in that they will not have anything to contribute.If they have not used it in 12 months delete them.But for personal reasons sometimes members cannot log on for weeks at a time so deleting them after 2 months seems excessive. Only if there is a cost in terms of bandwidth/network resources/database size by having memebers that don't post should anything be done. Memeber numbers are as meaningful as the number of posts each person has made. If one person has one problem and that is solved by another person who only has one answer then thats enough.Stop thinking in terms of quantity and in terms of quality. I think you will find that to use the search feature you have to be logged in. So if people are registering to search our database of knowledge then that is fine. I'm flattered in fact and so should our active members be.We did consider allowing guests to post in the hijack board but decided against it as there could have been a problem with spamming. I like our members to be active on the boards but it isn't a condition of membership. It would be nice if they said hello but they don't have to if they don't want to. pwp Posted April 27, 2004 Report Share Posted April 27, 2004 i think it would be unproductive to close the forum to guests as this would justmean more none posters would join just to have a quick look.i myself joined after 6 months of visiting because the people were so friendlyand helpful. but had the forum been locked i probably wouldn't have bothered.also having only 1 finger typing skills and bad grammar i normally don'tpost that much as it is a chore but do view most days. the people that matter are the ones that stay of their own free will.and those that drop in for help when required is good exercise for the modsas they enjoy the challenge and i presume the main reason for the forum.
